Default 86 vett runs really bad. every once in a while

The car runs fine And then out of nowhere it starts running really Rich. It bogs and will not clear out. eventuly it cuts off. It will start right back up but still runs rough . -Then it starts running fine again. You go some where and it is running fine Park it and come back and have to limp home. You never know when it is going to happen. But it will start back running fine again. Anybody else experiance this?

My initial guess is that your coolant sensor may be faulty.

I experienced the same issue long ago with my 87. I was getting code 33 (Mass Air Flow Sensor) MAF. I replaced it multiple times and had a few shops look into it but never was able to fix it, so I had to sell it. Also look at the MAF wiring... I have seen the pullies rub the coating off and ground out intermittantly.

Good luck, I hope you find the problem.

Is it possible one of the fuel injectors is intermittently hanging open?

The next time it does it, I would try to quickly find the cylinder (or cylinders) that are missing (check the exhaust pipe with a IR temp gun) to see if you can localize the injector(s) that are the problem? Pull the plug(s) in the vicinity and if are wet, it will tell you it is an injector problem.

Good luck... GUSTO

Why? Our computer is very primitive and as long as it is a plausible value, life is good and no codes. Before I go there, I'd make sure that the values the ECM sees is correct.

When was the last time you replaced plugs, wires, cap and rotor? When it does it, hook up a fuel pressure gauge to see what is going on. Also run your car in a dark garage and spray a fine water mist around the wires and see if it shows anything. After that, start data logging.

If you suspect the MAF, have you cleaned the thing off lately? Are you using an oil based air filter like a K&N and might have over oiled it?

My first guess would be the FPR. To check it you need to get a fuel pressure gauge from a local autoparts store. If not your FPR I know this sounds stupid but make sure your gas cap is screwed on properly. I know with my vette if I did not screw it on with three clicks I would have those same symptoms.

Sounds weird. I can run cap or not and it didn't make any difference. Ask me how I know.

Lol sounds like a good story, I didn't have my cap screwed on right a couple of times right after I got my vette and it would sputter to a stop (also a hot Florida day).

Because I chased a gremlin in my 84. No codes so I basically replaced all the sensors one by one and same ****. Replaced computer, runs like a champ. Those early computers after 30yrs are hit and miss.Opened up the original and the traces where peeling up off the board.Reman. Computer $85. He needs to check for codes first
