C4 transmission leak at speedo housing
Hi, new member! Have an 85 C4 that is gorgeous, just love it. Tranny leaks at speedo housing (about 1/8 cup per week). Been to 3 trans repair shops and 1 Chevy dealership but can't get it stopped. Tried new housing and new O ring but still no luck. Shouldn't be all that tough ? Any suggestions ???

Is your 3.07 original and is the speedo/odo correct as it is now? If you have a SPID LABEL in the compartment it should display G44 for an option.
If yes to that then you buy a GM# 10456089 VSS (or equivalent), an appropriate connector and the o-ring if it doesn't come with the VSS and you should be fixed. If you're shopping an auto parts store you might try a WELLS SU1005 and a WELLS 236 connector.
Ask the autop arts store for a GM# 10456089 equivalent and a connector if they don't do WELLS. VSS, cut-splice connector and if you've still a leak it ain't the VSS!!

Is the VSS in the car now a center connector? The part # I gave you will be an outer perimeter one but with the correct connector I'd expect no issues. The gear on your VSS should be greater than 40 with the G44 and the part # is indexed for that offset. Your gear might be green and 42 tooth if you count!

Is this an A4 or a M4+ transmission. The VSS will actually leak through the "center" connection. When you say housing did you mean VSS? What axle ratio is your car? If you know that the leak is at the speedo housing it can only be the connector through the center or the VSS OR o-ring. A leak from other than those 2 points would indicate a hard part housing defect of sorts.
Replaced my VSS about 2 years ago. It was leaking thru "O" ring and center of electrical center of the pins. I verified this and replaced the VSS along with the new seal. It stopped the leak 100%.
Of course most repair stations would not take the time as I did to watch and wipe for the leaks and be **** about the whole process but I did not know what I had at first so I was careful about the correct symptoms. Make sure the VSS goes in correctly with no turning or rotation during installation.

You might consider this first - that's a very substantial leak. Maybe no one actually used a correct seal for the VSS, buy a GM# 15552872 NOTHING ELSE and put it together again with what you've got. Make sure the seal is in the groove of the VSS and just lube it - use no sealer!

I recently developed a pretty bad trans leak. I had a shop look at it and they replaced the front & rear seals, pump seal and pan gasket. 2 days later it's still leaking. Can you tell me where the VSS is located so I can look at it my self?
Thanks, in advance
Pete

Leak stopped
From what the shop told me, the leak was coming from the kickdown cable seal at the transmission. I got the car back last Friday and it hasn't leaked a drop since.
