Default 1991 l98 Service engine soon

Along with the service engine soon display, I get a sys appearing in the speedo display. the speedometer reads 0 at any speed, and the cruise control doesn't work. it also won't idle. This has been intermittent for a while, and is now constant. any ideas?

Vehicle Speed Sensor? Any way you can scan it to confirm if the ECM is seeing any speed reading?

I'm afraid I don't have the equipment to do that. I can only do basic maintenance.

Maybe an Autozone has a scanner? If you are keeping the car I'd get one. You will need it sooner or later.

Make sure you get a scanner and NOT a code reader

I ordered an OBD1 reader a few minutes ago. It was only $24, but you're saying that's not what I need. I didn't see any scanners for 1991 gm. Any suggestions on where to buy?

Snap on MT2500? What you got is a code reader. A $24 paperclip. I can do it with a paperclip if all it does is tell me what code is present.
