Disected My Fuel Pump
Thought I would cut open my old fuel pump to check for debris. Surprisingly, I saw none...Considering what made it to my filter, I thought Id find at least something....

Back in the day of th 80s I remember if someone wanted to get someback they would put sand in the gas tank. Living along the IL reiver plenty avail. Mabey someone did that and the system was efficient enough to filter it without problems. Usually the persons car would not start and he would half to drop the tank ect.

It's possible the first pump died from passing the stuff that got caught in the filter, and for whatever reason when the pump was replaced, the filter wasn't?
Just spitballing here.

No, it was not the original pump, had the Carter logo on the side of it..... It was done 12-13 years ago.... Why would anyone not change the fuel filter with a new pump is beyond me.... but thats probably the case.

I've swapped my fuel filter twice since I brought the car home back at the end of March. The first time was right away, as part of the tune up, and to evaluate whether I needed to tear into the fuel system immediately.
The second was the weekend before last, just to see if I'd caught any more crud since I was dumping some cleaners into the tank with every fill up since I changed it the first time.
Everything was still pretty clean. So, should be good, but the whole sender / pump etc., is still on my list of things to do, just not the top priority.
Weatherstripping is next, now that the car is running well.

You're doing the fuel pump now too? Man, we are doing things in the same order. Was doing the valve covers the same time you were...

I'm having a lot of trouble since swapping my injectors, so it might be one you might want to watch.
What kind of replacement fuel pump did you go with? I ordered a Delphi, because they're just about the only ones I found little or no dirt on...but when it arrived, it had some strange extension on the bottom of it, and it just didn't mount right. 12-13 years is not bad...considering that Carter.

I got the pump from Racetronix with all the necessary parts like the clamps, gasket and new SS screws so I don't have to reuse the rusted ones.
