Default general question about 84 interior vs 86

there is a guy parting out an 84 near me and he is giving me dibs on interior panels and trim panels. its the same color as mine inside (med. grey).

my trim panels around the hatch and the arch over the head are deformed in my 86 and i'd like to buy them and replace them with these parts if they fit.

also, the kick panel under the passenger side, with the light and the vent, i'd like to source these from this 84 if possible as well.

anybody have a sense of which parts are compatible inside?

I don't think there were any major updates for the interior 84-86, so they should be ok. (maybe color matching though).

Only thing I'm aware of (I could be wrong) is the digital dash. Everything else should be the same?

I dunno what all you are after, but I have pretty good luck using the part numbers to determine year and fit for stuff like that..

Here's a good source:

Pretty sure there is a difference in the 84 and the 85-89 as far as that hatch trim piece, where it actually locks in.

Cluster trim panel will not interchange.

The '86 cluster was angled differently to try to help cut glare in bright sunlight. Engineering moved the bottom of the cluster away from the driver approx. 1/2".

The '1984-85 trim will leave a gap between the bottom of the gauge displays and the trim opening in a 1986-89. The 1986 will not fit into the 1984-85 dash.

thank you jonathon.

is that the only interior part that will not interchange?

there some different door handle pulls on the very early 84's i think but other than that are they interchangeable?

There will be trim differences between the years but they should interchange. You would need to change out both door panels.

I have an acquaintance who has an '84. I'll try to get over to see him this weekend to look at his door trims.

I recently discovered that the AC control panel is different. 1984 is a one-off year, and it uses a different A/C control panel. 1985-89 use a panel with a faceplate that you can replace, those will not work with the 1984. Also, I think some of the markings for seat / mirror controls may differ slightly between '84 and '85-89.

I was at a show yesterday where a '85 was in attendance and its door trim panels are identical to my '86.

Greetings.
I got the pics of the '84 door trim along with pics of my '86 door trim posted.

The gist is that the soft trim should interchange w/o any problems; the difference is in the inner release handle and assoc. parts.

The electric lock switch is a '84 only switch and the release handle is different so the metal attaching plate with the map light would need to be changed out to the '84 soft trim or the entire door panel should work.

Hope this helps.
