Swapping my Dana 36 for a D44
I was told that my D36(1984 manual) can only be replaced with a D44 unless you replace the half shafts and yokes? IOW a 1984 36 replacement requires a 1985-1987 D44. I understand that the batwing an TQ arm also are not interchangeable with my D36(no issue there as sellers will supply those.. So this limits my search to those years. Is this correct?

Dana 44 is going in. I understand your comments. However I was told the 88 and newer requires 88 and newer half shafts and yoke. Is this true? Are the internals of a 88 and newer D44 different than 87 and older D44?.
Thank you/

This is a half-shaft #6, there are steel and there are aluminum. They will swap.

I'm debating on doing the same swap. How much money you got into it so far? Vette dana 44 are pretty pricey for what you get.
Been considering instead of the dana 44, I been thinking of running ford 9in 35 spline irs in my car? Its very similar money to the dana 44. I'm probably going to do this upgrade this winter.
I have an warmed up LS 6.0L engine swap and 700R currently in a 85 vette.

No you just have to build your own bat wing for the dutchman ford 9in.

The next weak link with be the axle hub output shafts ends. I haven't found any upgrades there yet. Would be nice if someone makes a billet 300m output shafts for the dana 36/44?

..... Let us know how that works out for you ... take lots of pics ... particularly interested in how it compares cost-wise to swapping in a D44 .....

Its going to be my winter project this year and next. My current dana 36 bat wing is leaking pretty bad right now in my car. I was hoping on getting a few more miles on it prior to ripping everything apart. I'm still not sure on what transmission I'm going to run. I really want to install a tremec six speed, but my bank account says 700r
I'm not much for taking pictures.
I'm going to build my own c beam, the factory unit was pretty flexible. I reforced the ends quite abit which bolts to the transmission and rear end.
