New Melrose Exhaust & Borla Mufflers
Hello Everyone,
I’ve just completed my car and now have it on the road.
However, I have a major drone issue. The problem occurs between 1300 and 1800 rpm in all gears. You cannot even think, converse or hear the radio.
I have a Melrose header and exhaust system with Borla mufflers. 1.75 Primary, 3” Collectors, 3” x Pipe, 3” high flow cats, to 2 ½ Borla 11376 Mufflers.
I can’t afford to change the mufflers, so …… What would you recommend ?
I am considering this Car Chemistry insert?

I’m not really concerned about losing small amounts of horsepower. The car has plenty of power!!
Thanks again!!

I have Borla mufflers on my '88. . They sound great from the outside , but inside, the drone is the same as yours.
I put a layer of sound deadener under the back carpet, but still has drone. I just got used to it.
I find that when the top is off it's much less noticeable.

Had the same issue with my 94, only fix was to use my stock mufflers instead of the Borla... drone gone. You may find some used LT1 mufflers for a lot less than aftermarket.

Identify the frequency in hertz that your car drones at through an easily achievable smartphone app, then build 1/4 wave (most of the time commonly mis-referred to as helmholtz) resonators and reduce your drone in massive amounts for the cost of some exhaust pipe and someone to weld it in.

You have several options.
1. Use a quality resonator
2. Helmholtz Chambers (fabrication)
3. Stock Catback (Sounds really good with LT's)
4. Corsa
5. The car chemistry inserts might work. When I had my Magnaflow catback I stuffed stainless steel wool in the two outside outlets of the mufflers and it reduced the drone of the system considerably.
Decide which route works best for you.

A) Borla makes venturi inserts to put before their mufflers
B) Make a silencer for the mufflers.

I talked to my exhaust guy and he told me that the stock mufflers flow very well and have zero drone. If you want them louder, you need to remove the catalytic converter or replace with a performance one.
On my 89, I removed the pre-cats, added a hi perf catalysis and lef the stock mufflers. Sounds really good, no drone and has that fun burble on deceleration.
