I don't know if my 96 (also 6sp) is any different, but when my VSS died the speedo quit but I didn't get any lights. If you want to test it before removing the old VSS, you can unplug the sensor connection and plug into a new VSS, then turn it with a drill (or even your hands, really). With the key on but engine off, you should see your speedo register a reading by doing that. Worked for me.

If your VSS isn't the problem, then it's probably time to check fuses and circuits. You'll want the factory service manual for that. Also, of course, look up the codes and follow the manual's diagnostic check-downs.

Since the ECM is first stop for the VSS a VSS failure I'd think should set the 24 DTC anytime there's a failure. If you don't have the DTC 24 then you move on.

A new speed sensor should be here today from NAPA and just on the safe side I ordered a drive and driven 42 tooth green gears just in case they are broke from Summit. I did talk to TCI Automotive and they thought this set would fit even though it was for an automatic transmission.

My RPO Code on the PIN is a D3X and the FSM shows a 42 tooth Green GM # 25513049 driven gear. The ATI # 880030 is a green driven gear.

Also bought the matching 42 tooth drive gear from TCI as Part #880019A green also.

Just wanted to make sure I hopefully have the correct parts and if they are I will exchange them out because they are newer. The old one's maybe becoming brittle also.

880030 is a NO GO & the 880019A is a NO GO also! Using Summit info The 0030 is for a cable driven and the 0019A is for 400 AT etc not a ZF.

If you got a VSS207 from NAPA and the car is an M6 you should be fine for the VSS.

Yup, the gears are wrong and will need to return. The sensor has the "D" shaft. Any place to find a new driven gear? The RPO is D3X and #25513049 42 tooth green. I will call TCI again as when I talked to them I didn't know about the shaft being a "D".

GREG @ Blowerworks I believe still has some of the driven gears.

I believe I have only 43 tooth still. I sent a 42 tooth to a fellow last week.

What did you get for a VSS? Brand & part #? Did you have the DTC?

I found the correct driven gear on ebay today and bought it. The sensor is the NAPA vss207 with the D shaft. After seeing the picture of the gear I can see why the shaft is long on the sensor not on the gear.

You could test the system using your new VSS and a rotary tool(drill) to save time. If speedometer works with the new VSS and rotary tool spin then the VSS is certainly the issue. If it doesn't you go further.

Had you actually checked the connector at the VSS before ordering anything?

I mentioned the spin test above. But I should have thought to mention some quick tests of the old VSS first. The OP needs to check to connect a voltmeter to the two pins of the old VSS and make sure it creates voltage when spun (by a drill or whatever). Then, check for continuity across the two pins of the VSS. You should have roughly 400ohms resistance across them. When mine went bad, it still made voltage when spinning, but there was infinite resistance across the two pins.

Could not find neither of my two obd1 scanners so had resort to the paperclip in the glovebox. C25, C41 and matching history codes H25, H41. Also a H54 on the fuel pump that was just changed out. For module 4 it only displayed a ERR message. In 9 showed H62 and a H72. In my code book it mentions a 72 as a VSS siginal loss but did not find that listed in my FSM.
I am going to pull the sensor from the transmission and hook a drill to that one to see if it registers at the speedometer. Just need to know which direction it should be going for the drill? Can that sensor act intermittently and not throw a code? Would the 72 code be the same as a 24? And don't understand the err for module 4?

I believe that the "err" you see is the failure to communicate with the ECM from the CCM. If your car is a C68 it might be interesting to see if the AC control displays a speed. See your FSM for instructions. If you don't have C68 then there's no other way.

If you have an "err" for 4 then you can't see the ECM data. Look in your FSM in section 5 for the explanations of the DTC 62 & 72.

Difficult to sort some of your last post - hard to tell if you're actually progressing through the diagnostic modules properly. I don't have cluster compatibility for dtc display but I believe I understand it. I have a '90 and use a Tech1. I would have thought you might have done the diagnostics that you're doing now before ever ordering parts.

Jacked up the car and blocked. Got under it and removed connector as it has a extended piece to it. Looked ok so taped it up. Now trying to remove the 10mm bolt is a real pain when lying on a cement floor with very little room to work and poor lighting. Got it broke loose. Not much room around the exhaust pipe. Will make one more attempt tomorrow using a nut driver, otherwise let the neighbor do it on his hoist.
I did find one of my scanners today and will recheck codes and find out more in module 4 as to why there is a error message.
Getting to old climbing under the car!

Got the bolt out finally. Not sure how it will go back in. I also thought it was a dry well for the unit. Wrong! Wiggled it a couple of times and popped right with the drivenn gear.
Hooked both units up to the drill both registered and the old one had higher figures. I guess I was wrong.
Will try and get it reassembled.
Will need to see why module 4 shows error. Perhaps something in there caused the problem and engine is running in limp mode?

Even though the old VSS tested out ok, I at the last moment installed the new one. At least now it's 24 years newer!. Started it up and ran for about 7 minutes when asr and service soon light came on along with both cooling fans. Will try pulling codes again. I noticed cable to asr was loose may need to readjust that. Have to check fsm for the procedure. At least it is back on 4 wheels.

Does anyone know where I can get a green 42 tooth driven speedometer gear for my ZF 6 speed?
