I was thinking about replacing my cats due to emissions test failings and was wondering about the quality and performance of the Random Technology cats.
I had some bad luck with the Random Tech direct fit cats. Passenger side heat shield fell off, and the driver's side heat shield rattled loose. Also, I had to trim a notch into the knock sensor shield so the forward O2 sensor wouldn't hit it. I called and questioned the technician and his response was that RT had some lay-offs right around that time (11/01 - 1/02) and some of the products went out with bad quality welds. He said RT would be glad to fix them (but what a hassle to remove the cats, ship them to RT, wait a week to get them back, then reinstall) or I could put some small bolts to hold the heat shields on, so maybe this winter I'll have them rewelded. You might want to confirm your cats were not assembled around that time. I think they make to order the Corvette direct fit cats, and don't keep a surplus of them, so they are made as needed.
Around 4 years ago I bought an R/T convertor and Borla 2.5" cat back system for my '85. Everything fit up perfectly. Two weeks after I installed it, I had the emissions tested. The supervisor at the smog station asked me to run the car a second time because he thought the reusults were too low. My car has subsequently passed with flying colors 2 more times. Good product! We'll see what it can do with the new heads and cam in place!
Re: Anyone used Random Technology cats?? (Heckler45)
I also have R/T cats. I passed the emission test with flying colors. I have had some problems, the drivers side heat shield has a broken weld. When I tried to install the drivers side cat the first time, the 02 sensor bung was in the wrong spot, the 02 sensor was hitting the knock senser. so I had to send back to R/T to have it repaired. They did a very nice job and they were easy to deal with. Would I buy R/T cats again ? YES.
Re: Anyone used Random Technology cats?? (Ron 93 Vette)
buy an after market exhaust and headers. Throw cats away. pay the emmision guy soem extra $$ and he'll put up a honda civic for testing for ya with your cars vin # = PASS. Id say theyre good if ur building a sleeper.
The shop i know did a dyno on this..... 406 turbo in a 95..
1154 rwhp HEaders open..
1091 rwhp B&B + headers
951 rwhp Random techs + B&B
kind of extreme cuz of 1000 hp and all, but i figured what teh heck and tossed my cats. I even threw em against the wall cuz i hated them !
