I agree with the idea of cleaning your throttle plates and throttle body in general. These parts have to be cleaned (on the INSIDE) regularly like mentioned above. I like to use BG 44K fuel system cleaner as it does a great job at keeping a glass smooth idle. I run a can through the gas tank every 3000 miles when I do my oil changes. You will find that many car dealerships run the exact same stuff through the car when somebody complains about idle issues.
The other possibility could be that you have a vacuum leak someplace, it may not be likely but vacuum leaking can cause some strange issues with these cars.
On my 1988 Coupe the vacuum lines were dried out and cracked/broken in places. This led me to have a idle problem. After fixing a leaks at the cruise control servo and the EGR solenoid vacuum supply my idle calmed down. Since my hoses are 29 years old I figured it was time to start the process of replacing them.
Good Luck with your car! It is nice to see another LIFETIME Member!!

Reason: adding a thought
It could also be the throttle blade shaft is binding in it's holes. The symtom was a high idle that you had to punch the throttle to get the idle to come down....This is a known problem and can be repaired by having bushings installed on each end of the shaft.. Maybe someone will chime in with the name of the company that now does this repair.. There use to be a company on ebay that installed these bushings....WW
