Until you reach 65 and want to make 70, then you want 75. No age is a good point to croak.

Never had that sort of thing where I keep wanting more but the point to croak is before I lose too much function that life becomes more of a drag than it is fun. I've been notice function loss for the last 20 years already. Very slow pace but it keeps going and going and going.

Even if you got family, you are still going to be dependent. I see my mom with arthritis and her fingers are bent at a 45 degree angle and her back is bent (scoliosis). Sure, she's got more money than she can spend within reason but what good is it? She can't drive, travel or do much besides read the bible. Not the life for me.

I went through this with a cherry-looking Volvo turbo wagon. CARB certifieds are way more $$; probably supply, demand and cost of the certification. The sticker is actually a metal badge welded to the cat. Universals may present fitment issues and the mentioned adaptation welding costs, so I coughed up the extra dough to keep it simple (ordered from Ohio, shipped from down the street and took 2 weeks?).

Some cheaper, and "high flow" cats have very little catalyst inside and might last a couple years, while the 'good' ones will be cheaper in the longer term, 'cause they'll pass for many moire years!

At least '84/'85s have just the one cat!

Hi Gene, if you were still looking for a solition we offer 2 CARB-legal catalytic converter replacements for your 85: one direct-fit unit, which can be bolted right up to the exhaust and a universal-fit, which will require welding. You can find more information about them here on our website:

Direct fit - http://www.magnaflow.com/products?partNumber=332440

Universal - http://www.magnaflow.com/products?partNumber=332019

If you have questions about either of these products, please feel free to drop us a PM or call at 1-800-990-0905!

After reviewing the Magnaflow information (above), it appears that my shop installed the wrong cat! I'll have to look into that!

Thanks, Magnaflow.

Thanks for all the input. Based on the forum advice and my research, there are two cats made by Magnaflow they list as compatible with my 1985 vette. The universal fit 332019 $190 with round 3" pipes and the bolt-on 332440 $320 with oval pipes. The cat on My 85 has oval pipes so the universal will not work without some fabrication work and obviously welding. The labor will put the cost up towards the the bolt-on price. There may be a round to oval adapter but again welding I'm not set up to do. The bolt on looks like the way to go. We will see how well it fits when I order it and I will post the final outcome.

Yep, they installed a cat with 2 1/2" tubes "because it was approved by the CARB, and it was easier to install"!! Funny thing . . . the CARB lists the 2 1/2" cat as acceptable!! They replaced it with a correct 3" tube Walker after a bit of an argument. When I mentioned I might ask the BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repair) about the controversy, they kicked me out! " . . . and don't come back!"

It was a "no charge" job! Their blunder. Even thought the CARB said the 2 1/2" was acceptable, Magnaflow would have been responsible if there was a warranty claim, and they probably would have rejected the warranty, because Magnaflow said it was the wrong cat. The 2 1/2" cat is for a V6.

Before this issue came to a head, he complimented me on the car, and he agreed that for an engine to run good, it needs to breathe good. He knew his stuff! And he is an excellent welder! A perfectly good Magnaflow cat went in the trash!

I hope the guy learned the old addage: "Just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you SHOULD do it!"

Again, thank you Magnaflow.

With these cars, it seems you have to research everything before laying out the $$$.
