If I had a stock C4 (and I do) and wanted a weekend cruiser or a car to run up and down the mountains a 3.07 geared car would be about is good as it gets especially for where an old 350 makes its peak HP and TQ (if you had the car living at a drag strip thats a whole other conversation).
I agree totally with what Polo Vert says and my car gets exactly 25/26 mpg. I personally have a 3.07 geared 86 and the car is way snappier than the 2.59 86 we had years ago.
I ran my car through many mountains this summer and the combo couldn’t have been better.

I put 3:73 in my C3 with a 700R4 trans. Great for 1/8 mile but should have went with 3:55 for the 1/4 as I run out of 3rd before trap. I had the 3:07 stock and while the 3:73 is fun, I would go 3:55 if doing it again.
If still looking for a shop, where you live would help.

where did you source it?
I appreciate everyone's views on the 3.07 but I am heading the .54/.73 route. This car is a weekend cruiser and I want it to struggle for grip and accelerate like crazy on the twisty mountain roads around here.
I plan on sending in my 36 housing to somebody to put in aftermarket gears and refresh it. Anyone done this and can recommend a vendor?

I love that you took the 'Vette on a trip like that. That's what it's for.

There was just an allure of taking an old Vette across the country and back that I had to do it, being on and off of RT 66 in a Corvette.
The 31 year old car did 5k miles in 9 days and even went through the desert twice.
It was a great experience and was glad my son and I could do it.

Less than 5 minutes. I've posted this before.
Check.
No. Leave the spring on.
No. We're pulling the whole rear assy.
No. DS slip yoke slides out of the trans when you pull rear assy, C-beam stays in car.
5a. Remove calipers
5b. Remove trailing arm brackets from body (3 bolts each side -no nuts to hold)
5c. Remove shocks...doesn't matter from body or knuckle
5d. Remove two batwing mount bolts.
Sort of. Position stand below trans to "catch" when lowered enough. Lower rear assy using floor jack under diff. Remove rear C=beam bolts, slide diff/rear assy rearward, out of c-beam...move to left some if necessary, then drop assy to floor on jack, roll out from under rear of car.
1/2 hour out, maybe 45 min back in b/c you have to line things up which takes a little more time.
FYI, when you're removing U-joints (axle shafts and rear DS u-joint), you only need to remove ONE u-joint strap bolt, per joint. Remove one, then loosen the other bolt on the same strap, and swing that strap 180* out of the way. Then loosen the two bolts on the other cap's strap a couple turns and the joint will slip out of the yoke.

That is why I remove the spring... it needs to be bolted to the new batwing. The diff handles real nice on the jack and has some wiggle room so the batwing bolts can get started.

I'm out in socal and could easily access any shop in LA/San Diego, IE, or High Desert
I am finalizing the decision about 3.23/3.55/3.73 - want the 3.73 but am a bit concerned I may not love 77mph being about 2600 RPM. Need to drive my car around in 3rd gear to test this out. Then I'm pulling the trigger

2600 is a dream....try around 3k+ @ 80 with 3:73's. I have 3:73's in my Z28 from the factory and 2600 is around 65-67mph.
