Agreed.

So after i agreed to but it, i said "ok its a done deal, now what i really in for?".
He said the car has no real issues. Why in the world did he continue to lie? Never the less. Its a good enuf car that i wish to invest into it. The issue with the car is fine. The thing that hacks me off is his dishonesty.
Guess its my fault i just assume folks involved with these kinds of assets are quality people.
Guess when their value drops enough, the trash gets in.
No biggie. He gave up a hell of a car.

Read up on the skip-shift feature, then call zf doc. I think you might be ok. Good luck!

Frankly it may not be as bad as an entire rebuild. If all it needs is a 2nd-gear blocker ring to get the synchromesh function working right again, then it would require a minimum of parts. You still have to open the case, but the labor time would still be a lot less than that of a full rebuild. Of course, if you can pull the transmission yourself and take it to someone, you're going to save a lot of labor cost. Or, you can find a good used ZF6 and swap it in for minimal downtime, and then have your current one repaired and saved as a spare. IOW, you have options.

I did that once with a mechanical kickdown 1990 700R4 4x4 tranny. The used one only lasted a few months. My luck is that i would get something not much better than the one i already have.

Well, A quick search indicates that you can get individual synchro rings to go between all the gears except for...you guessed it...the 1-2 ring. It is apparently different in design to the 3-4-5 rings, and seems unavailable by itself. Definitely contact ZF Doc.

Regarding your likely luck with a used replacement transmission, I can understand your skepticism. That said, good used ZF6s pop up here on the C4 Parts forum, and I would generally trust someone from this forum more than an eBay or craigslist seller. At least here you can search for a seller's previous posts in all forums to get a sense of his general character and car history. You might consider placing a want-to-buy ad there for a ZF.

I'm not sure if you have ever serviced a ZF, but the amount of labor will be roughly the same to replace the 1-2 synchro as it is to go through the entire transmission. It is not cheap to go into the case.

I would imagine, the used zf6 will cost as much as fixing the one i have. What are your thoughts?

When a guy tells you "ok, im buying your car. Now really, what am i up against?", and you dont come clean, really says something. I also asked that he have the steering wheel recentered. He told me he had an appt to get it done. So when i recieved the car.... you guessed it. Crooked as f¿{f. Never touched.
That was my first indicator.
No worries. As for a C4, the only car better woulda been a real GS or ZR1. This one is the right color even!

They seem to go for between $1000-1500 in good condition around here.

Before you do anything, you need to call Bill (zf doc) and discuss your problems with him. If he quotes you $3500 for a rebuild, I would start searching for a nice used one in the $1500 range.

Default ZF6 mods

Ok. My car is getting gearbox rebuilt. I have heard some guys talking about the tranny making noise when clutch is is and there is a fix. Also some oil passage to improve 5th and 6th gear oiling at high rpm. Refresh my memory please.

Ok. Heres the skinny. 1-2 slider, 5-6 slider, reverse slider, new gaskets, new synchro kit and lube. Parts $1710 shipped. Labor $840. So $2550 and she is good as new. Word of advise here. ZF S6-40 parts are made of unobtanium. If you have one of these lil gems, be gentle.
should shift like butter.
So, what is the preferred shifter for this application? Might as well put it in now.

22 for a like new ZF is worth it in the long run, wouldnt trust any used trans unless I knew the guy and drove it. People will never tell all thats wrong with a car, spend and enjoy

I once bought a junkyard 700R4 for my 4x4. Two months later i ended up having it rebuilt. Used trans is NOT an option. I ended up paying the bill on labor twice. Never do that again.
