Got it! had to unhook it from the asr first then from underneath. Now can I leave the torque converter on the flex plate or do I have to remove those bolts before the bellhousing bolts?

Remove the bolts first, then the converter will pull with the tranny.

^^^ This.

You can leave it on the flexplate, but you'll dump about a gallon and a half of trans fluid on the floor and you will never be able to get it lined back up to install.

Absolutely rotate the engine and remove the flexplate bolts before proceeding.

Thanks for the advice confab and 81c3! I will be sure to remove those bolts tomorrow. is it just me or is it a PITA that the inspection cover goes around the starter without a slot to remove it, without taking out the starter... so I have to take the starter off to remove the cover but put it back to turn the motor over to get my bolts?

Can't you turn the crank at the front with a socket and breaker bar?

See if the local parts store has a flywheel turning tool to loan. Saves climbing around

I agree with the others, turn the engine by hand. Do not use the starter. I take a pointy pry bar and just shove them around, but any of the methods mentioned above will work fine.

Be sure to disconnect the battery!!!!

No wonder I don't use an inspection cover.

This is a little late, and maybe redundant. But loosen your plugs and turn the flexplate by hand. Ay least, that's what I do.
