Default iron frisbee

I have an 89 L98. What's the purpose of the iron Frisbee on the water pump. Any harm in removing it?

It was to eliminate a possible vibration with the air conditioning on. Lots of people have removed it and it works fine. (Earlier cars did not have the frisbee) Pull it off and see what you think.

Pulled ne off just because... Why carry something around that might fix something and why add all that load to the water pump bearing?

Default belt chirp

Did more research and found that the frisbee can also make the belt chirp, which mine does. Didn't always do it, not sure when it started since I don't drive the car that much any more. The car chirps when it shifts at anything above 1/2 throttle. I thought it was the trans. I'll remove the frisbee after the snow and salt are gone and see if that fixes it.

As stated, when they changed to the NipponDenso AC Compressor in 88, they added this piece to calm a vibration.

Nearly everyone who knows its there ends up removing it.

The belt can chirp if old and dried up or has oil on it or just a bad tensioner too.

The belt and tensioner are fairly new, but they're Dayco. A mechanic recommended I go back to Delco. I removed the frisbee, now I have to wait for the snow and salt to go away.
