Default Clutch engagement height (ZF)

The clutch on my '95 seems to engage right at the top of the pedal travel. The engagement is smooth but a makes up a substantial part of the pedal arc -- unusually substantial compared to most manual transmission vehicles I've driven. The car has 41k miles and I know for a fact that the clutch and assoc hydraulics are all original. I would be surprised if there is any clutch free play with the pedal out.

Is this par for the course on these cars? I don't want to throw parts at the car unnecessarily, but I also don't want to tear up the transmission due to failing hydraulics or clutch. The trans shifts crisply and without grinding.

Yes it is, I thought the same thing when I got my 94'. However, when you are releasing the pedal, about halfway up you should feel it begin to engage, it just won't be fully released until its almost all the way up.

^ I agree. Overall, yes the take-up happens in the upper portion of the travel. This is normal.
Mine has about 3/4 inch of free play at the very top (meaning when I first put my foot on the pedal it will move down about 3/4 inch before any resistance is felt).
The clutch hydraulics are self-adjusting as the friction disc wears away over time. Keep an eye on the clutch fluid and condition. Should be replaced about every 3-4 years unless it goes dark sooner.

If it does not start to grab about half way your clutch is getting worn. Mine started to grab about 3/4 or more out and the clutch was toast, not slipping, but worn out. Now with a new clutch it grabs just before halfway and fully engaged at just past half way out.

Interesting...What did you replace the stock setup with?

I agree with others here. I can tell you for a fact, when the clutch starts to engage right off the floor, your hydraulic system is bad. That’s when you better check the fluid.

Sounds like everything is working properly.

Stock OEM stuff. Don't ask me how I found it, was not easy. Had to do some horse trading to get it all.

Just another data point here. My clutch begins to engage in the top half of travel, too. It doesn't fully engage until very near the top. This has been the case with two different clutches in the car. I guess this is normal for this car.
