Does anyone now of a short throw shifter kit for the 4+3 trans?? Also a couple other questions...I just got an '87 and have been using premium gas, just want to make sure that is what it takes, also the bladders in the sport seats dont seem to fill up, nor the do the lateral support wings adjust, anyone know of how to diagnose whats wrong or fix the problem...thanks for the info :p:
$20! What a deal!! Have you ever felt a shifter that has it installed??
...Every day...
You won't notice any difference in effort, but yes the travel is shortened...
There are (at least) two different "kits"; one uses bushings, one doesn't. I have the one that doesn't. (Same as OEM links).
Only two pieces; replaces the 1-2 & 3-4 trans rod-to-fork links. Requires Neutral alignment, meaning you have to make a tool & take console/fascia apart. Removing drivers seat *greatly* simplifies things.
Good Saturday job, lets you learn a lot about your interior and the shifter as well. (And when you get a good look at your shifter, you'll want to disassemble & clean it...They get really mungy...)
friend of mine has this on his 87 and loves it. says it was an easy install $20 part too (mid-america? maybe can't rememebr where he got it) for the 4+3 (wish it was that easy on my ZF6)
The OEM links don't have bushings, and if there's one thing GM got right on the '86 - '87 Vettes, it's the heat treatment on the rods/links/shifter plates. My '86 with 109K miles had virtually no wear in the rods/links/plates.
Plus, the bushings are a slip fit, not pressed in, so there's that much more slop in the assembly. (My opinion).
Best $20 you can put in a 4+3. (Opinion again).
Plus, it's a confidence building fix-it for those of us barnyard hicks with little mechanical experience...
