Default 89 dash/dic questions for modification

I have a 1989 C4 with the base ac controls.

The driver's information and switch panel take up alot of room.

I would like to replace them with a small panel of micro-switches and led's, to the side, which would allow me to put a double din (short, no cd player) up higher in the dash for better visability.

I would permanently have it set to show: the miles/kilometers set to miles, oil pressure, and water temperature. A microswitch would switch the trip odometer, and oil temperature or I might just add a small oil temp gauge. I would install a micro digital voltmeter (.5x1") so no need to switch volts.

1. The original switches are big and clunky but I assume they were cheaper for GM, plus it looks more substantial, does anyone think there is some real current running through the switches?

2. Do the switches do anything more than simply switch between backfeed wires?

3. Do the lights in the dic do anything more than simply go on or off?

4. Is there anything in the car that depends on the factory dash being installed? cruise control?

I searched and don't see anything like this.

Thank you.
