Speaking of "No Brainers"!! First of all, it is the OP I am here to help, not wanabees like yourself. The OP ASKED for information and was provided that, of which he thanked us for. IHBD shows he has familiarity with these boxes and shared his knowledge. I provided a video from one of the most respected transmission people in existence. Do you consider his information bullshit? The OP stated he is unfamiliar with these OD units. With additional information, he is probably more comfortable with what he is dealing with. I will take my cue from him, not from a blowhard who is trying to dazzle with what he does not know.

You don't pick up on things too quick do you? A closer observation will show the butt-hurting started with your second post. If you paid more attention to the OP's posts, you would see how ridiculous you are sounding.

To bring this thread back on topic...
i have findings! We had an unexpectedly gorgeous day today so I dropped the pan and took some pics. The good news is there are no metal shavings of any kind in the pan. The fluid was black as night but nothing worrisome in there.
Got it it all back together and discovered I only had one quart of ATF. So I put that in and pulled back into the garage. I’ll get some more ATF tomorrow. Anyone know off the top of your head how much I’ll need? I didn’t blow out the cooler lines or anything so there’s probably still some in the system.
This was just about all the fluid left in the thing-it was very low. That concerns me a bit but the OD has been finicky since I bought it so I’m betting it was already very low when I bought it. If there’s a leak it’s probably a slow one.

For the cooler lines you can spin the rear tires when it's in the air and the pump will pump the fluid out. If there's no fluid in it it won't though. You could disconnect the return line and spin it real quick to prime it. That'll get you at the full full level. I don't think it's necessary to blow them out...

You should need about two quarts on non-synthetic automatic transmission fluid to complete the change. Make sure you change the filter also. Great that you didn't find any metal shavings in there.

Mr. All-Caps probably doesn't know much about how these boxes work (but he'd like you to think he does),
Mr. "ALL CAPS" here! FOURSPEEDVETTE to be exact. Well Mr. "all small case letters". It's not wise to make such a general assumption or to call someone out. You don't know me or my skill level. I'm always glad to try and help out others with questions if I can. I don't proclaim to be an expert or the most knowledgable on these transmissions or these cars in general. Maybe you should take that advice also. You're not always right in many posts you enter either. Learn to read others comments as what they trust to do in different mechanical need situations. Maybe, just maybe you'll learn something.

The screen should be a very easy find. Any auto parts store could help you for likely less than the Corvette resellers. This FoMoCo number is generally a screen and a FMX gasket(which is incorrect/wrong) but some do offer it as just the screen, Raybestos and Fram maybe all there are any more that do.
FoMoCO# D0AZ-7A098-A
A friend several years ago bought Raybestos I believe.
A correct gasket and grommet???????????
5spds.com still shows a package consisting of all 3
http://www.5speeds.com/cart/index.ph...product_id=101
I had a GearVendors(DNE at the time ) in my '85 ton dually TH400 - sold it before it was ever time for a filter change.

These don't have a filter. They have a screen. The screen can be removed, cleaned with BrakeKleen and reinstalled. It doesn't need to be replaced unless it is damaged. I read on here that the screen is a Ford FMX screen from the 60's. The only FMX screen I found had two holes in it for tubes. The DNE has only one hole. I cleaned mine and reused it.
If it WAS a "filter", I'd definitely want to change it if I found that black fluid like the OP has. But because it is only a "screen", it can be cleaned and re-used. No problem.

If they were $62 a pop like the ones in the trans in my boat then I'd think about cleaning. My issue is each trans is about 8k... so the $62 is cheap insurance for me. Its a little tiny thing too. Smaller then a sterno. Sucks there's too.
That screen is basically a membrane, forcing it clean will actually allow larger particles through it. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

So I got under there and put another quart into the OD unit. Did the manual transmission fluid while i was at it, since it's easy once you're already under the car. Results were...not what I was hoping.
OD will engage, but only if I take my foot off the throttle entirely. Once it is engaged, it will stay engaged unless I give it much throttle-then it immediately disengages. Like, any more than maintaining current speed and it disengages. Going up a hill? Disengages. It will re-engage if I let go of the throttle and I can continue driving. I know it's supposed to disengage if you floor it, but I'm feathering the throttle and it disengages.
I drove for about 30 minutes, listened and felt for any grinding noises or anything that sounded out of place, and I didn't hear anything. That plus the lack of any metal shavings at all in the transmission fluid leads me to believe there's nothing grinding.
What's the next test? If it involves dropping the OD out of the car, I'll be honest-I'll probably just drive without OD for a while. If there's more that I can do on the car, I'll do my best to test it ASAP.
Thanks for all the help!

Reading here it looks like there could be an electrical issue. They also mention a manual override-I've read about jumping a switch or something to accomplish this. Anyone else done that? I'd rather have manual control than have it keep going in and out on me.

It's supposed to look at throttle position. The manual override makes it an on off type control iirc.

Id rather have manual control to be honest. Any ideas why the OD won’t stay engaged?

If your tps is adjusted and working correctly I'd then think maybe the filter not seated all the way. If it's first in line and getting an air leak it could be allowing for wonky pressures. Again it could be the kickdown cable but I haven't dug deep enough into these to really know for sure. If it's like a regular transmission having the cable out of adjustment will make it slip and do all sorts of things.
