c4 to c5 brake upgrade - 12 slot "Salad Spinner" rims
Hi, I need to rebuild the brakes on my '89 and have looked at upgrading to J55 and also to C5 brakes. A friend has access to a state of the art machine shop and said he would make the adapters. My car has the 17" x 9.5" salad spinner rims. I see everywhere that sawblades won't fit. Does anyone have experience with the salad spinners? One other question, is it worth the expense to do either the j55 or the C5 upgrade on a daily driver. Thanks in advance for your advice!

The stock 17 inch wheels will not clear the c5 brakes. A molds, c5, or aftermarket wheels are required. Although the J55 and C5 are both13 inch the c5 caliper sits higher.

I agree that the '91-'96 sawblades do not fit. I tried them on my '99 and the inside edge of the vanes hit the caliper near the outside end of the vanes. The vanes curve slightly towards the center of the car and contact. Some people have ground away part of the vanes and/or part of the ribs on the caliper to make them fit, but I did not want to do that.
I agree that the A mold style wheels fit too. I tried the 17" x 9" versions on my '99 and they fit fine.
I do not have a set of the '88-'89 wheels to try, but I do have a set of the '90 wheels which I think are similar to them. They fit on my '99 with no modifications needed. So I suspect yours may fit.
Good luck.
