Default tack is dead

there is a lead off the dist. for the tack it goes to a electrical component the size of a aa battery its mounted on the transmission bolt this is a 90 cor. auto is it a noise suppresser or what. cant find it in manuals do I need to go to gm thanks

The component you are talking about is the Tachometer filter

Just to smooth out the signal. I would remove it by bypassing it and seeing what happens. If the tach doesn't work still, the problem is elsewhere. Maybe your gauge or a broken wire.
