Service asr and asr off lights are lit on my 1996 corvette
The SERVICE ASR and ASR OFF lights are lit on my 1996 Corvette coupe. What causes this and how do I correct this problem?

The ASR has a fault code and turns ASR light on. The fault code in this case disables ASR and turn ASR OFF light on. So driver knows the traction control is not working. You need to find out what code(s) are stored. Factory Service Manuals will have information on diagnosis.

You can self diagnose the problem by using the OBD system in the car. I believe sector 9 is what you are looking for that is displayed on your speedometer area. I do know 9 is for the ABS.
The factory service manual clearly outlines how you can pull up the trouble codes and clear them.
Connecting a scanner would also do the same thing and may be required depending on what the problem is.

The switch sends 12v to ebtcm to disable ASR. The switches are where to look. It's possible they are disconnected or have been damaged by aggressively trying to disable ASR.

How do you determine that the ASR is NOT turning off even though the light is telling you that it is OFF????
Do you have any warning information showing up in your Drivers Information Center???? You have not mentioned anything about any 'SERVICE ABS' or 'SERVICE ASR' lights.

OK..no warning lights.
BUT...as I asked and you did not answer:
How did you determine that the ASR is NOT turning off even though the light is telling you that it is OFF????

and the reason that DUB may be asking you this question is that the little bulb for "ASR OFF" may be burned out. Thus the ASR may indeed be turned off however you are not getting a "notification".
Thus the interest in how it was that you determined that the ASR was indeed not turning off

SO..If you turn the ASR off....and the light up on your DIC is showing that the ASR is OFF. Then the traction control has been disabled.
From what I know about the system is that if you have a good SAFE area to test it..and your press hard on your gas pedal when you are in gear. The rear tires should spin and do a burn out.
When the ASR is ON. The system monitors the wheel speeds and makes sure that they are all turning the same. So if the system detects that the rear tires are wanting to spin...the brakes and throttle are used to keep the rear wheel rotation the same as that of the non driven front wheels.

I'm having the same problem on my 1996 LT4. Occasionally on start up, the ASR SERVICE and ASR OFF lights are not lit, but eventually come on. Most of the time they are on when I start the car. Also, my cruise control doesn't work, I think its related. I bought the car a month ago, so I don't really know if the ABS and traction control are working, I guess I'll try to spin the wheels and see what happens.

When these lights come on or DO NOT come on when the ignition key is turned on and the engine not cranked...THERE IS A PROBLEM and it needs to be checked out.
Or do nothing and live with it.
Owning a GM service manual would tell you what you need to know.
