Default 2 part Q: How do I find out the current programming on my Chip. 1985

The mechanic is been taking my 85 to went on a rant about how time consuming reprogramming or seeing the current program would be. Which I could hear is... lots of money.

Q # 2: any good and honest mechanics in the Chicago / joliet out there?

You are a little short on information. If its the original prom (programming) there is 2 4 digit codes on it. The codes would match codes on original ECM label. Prom in under removable cover on ECM, and is to be transferred if ECM is replaced. It will not come with reman ECM. Since the same ECM canbe be used on multiple vehicles; PROM has to be swapped prior installing used ECM. An experienced tuner should have software to read prom software. An OBD1 scanner with the correct cartridge should read ECM data.

seems like it's easier to just get a stock chip if you can't verify it already is....then you'll know the starting programming....can't be that much...I had one of those "performance chips", noticed no difference. went back to the stock chip....

Should be one of these bins:

BCC Code Scan ID Trans Gear ratio Emissions
FTS 9529 0061 700R4 N/A Cal/Fed
FTT 9538 0071 4 spd Man 2.88 1st Fed
FTW 9573 0091 4 spd Man 2.88 1st Cal/Fed
FUM 0561 0101 700R4 N/A Cal/Fed
FUN 9737 0111 4 spd Man 2.88 1st Cal/Fed
HLH 3200 2531 700R4 N/A Cal/Fed
HLP 3266 2581 4 spd Man 2.88 1st Cal/Fed
HLS 2308 2601 4 spd Man 2.88 1st Fed
CSZ 2633 7101 700R4 N/A Fed
CTB 9032 7121 4 spd Man 2.72/3.07 Fed

Check for the BCC and PROM CODE on the prom label, or read the Scan ID with a scan tool to identify what you have now.

Next step would be to get a programmer that can read a 2732A 24 pin eprom and save a copy of the bin file.

Those are all your production codes - essentially what boxes were 'checked' when the car was being made. That let the people assembling the car know what options were to be installed, and let people working on the car know what optional equipment is present.
The chip with have a code on it, that's the numbers the other guy referenced. That chip is mounted to the ECM, which is under the passenger side kick panel/dash area.

Edit: assuming your rear-end is stock, code G44 indicates that you have a 3.07 rear axle ratio, MD8 means its a 700r4 trans.
