Default Time for a new clutch. What one ?

hello guys.

that time for a new clutch on my 1995 is came. There a lot of choises more or less expensive,
i'm wondering if a mcleod or similar 600$ clutch kit would be required, or to get a simply 200$ or less luk kit.

it looks like a valeo 299$ it is the stock kit.

I don't know offhand if it would fit a C4, but assuming it can be made to fit without a lot of modification, a really cost-effective upgrade is to use the GM C6 LS7 clutch and flywheel. I put it on my C5 and it works great. Handles 500 hp stock and OEM reliability. $499 from Scoggin-Dickey.

It won’t....completely different...

try to keep your dual mass FW if you don’t want a noisy tranny...The single mass aftermarket FW’s don’t dampen the engine pulses like the dual mass FW. There are ways around it but....if you can find OEM parts, that will be best.

Sigh... Sometimes I think they change stuff just to change stuff... Wonder if you can still get a C4 ZR1 clutch?

Not sure what your power goals are, but spec makes a beautiful stage 3+ clutch that i have been using in my 93 supercharged vert.

i had some issues with a carolina clutch stage 2 kevlar clutch (bought in 2002) where the center hub broke and detached from the disk requiring a tow home (car only had 355 rwhp at time).

Dont let anyone trash talk SPEC. The only caution you need to have is if you buy their pre balanced clutch/flywhee assemblies. Dont trust the balance. Take it to a flywheel shop and double check before you have to go back in there.

Also : Throw out the heavy POS dual mass flywheel and put a thicker countershaft shim in place to quiet it down. Use the dual mass as a boat anchor.
Make sure you go with a sprung hub clutch if you dump the dual mass.

I agree .....I run the spec stage II myself.....BUT....

we we need to warn folks about getting rid of the dual mass heavy *** FW....unless you get the shims from ZF doc, you are talking about rocks in the can noises that some can’t live with. Even with a sprung hub disk, it will be noisy especially with an aluminum FW...

Is the spec stage 2 the ‘kevlar’ one ?

i really liked my stage 2 clutch from carolina clutch. It had a great feel to it that didnt seem to change. Problem was when the center broke out : (

perhaps they improved the design since 2002 ...

i think the happy medium for flywheels is the single mass steel.

i will concede the alum flywheel is easier to stall out, and trickier to launch at the dragstrip.

i liked the rocks in a can noise. It was angry sounding in 1st gear acceleration ! Or provided a reminder if you were lugging up a hill that you should really downshift.

the shim fixes 90% of the rocks in a can noise. Find it odd that gm put in an expensive dual mass flywheel, whereas a sprung hub clutch and a thicker countershaft shim will fix the problem.

i think I would get in the future some mods to get max 350-400hp. No more. At the moment just catback, so I think I've gain some hp, it could be 5.

Also if still in good shape I wouldn't replace FW yet. Why do you say that is a bad part?

prefer still to run with dual mass for a while.
so in this case what would be a nice clutch.

Still running the stock clutch in my 94, ~375 rwhp, 4.10 gears, and many 1/4 mile runs with drag radials.

Go on the SPEC website, every clutch / flywheel combo from oem to race; pick and choose according to your needs; I run a Stage 3 plus clutch with a 22 lb billet steel flywheel.

Speaking for myself, I've had a bunch of bad spec clutches come through here. They have all been the single disc variety, but I won't buy one based on what I have seen.

YMMV.

My favorites are Valeo, Sachs, Luk and South Bend. I recently installed a dual disk McLeod that appeared to be of good quality.
