Default starter doesn't work.

Hi,
Corvette 1985.
I have a problem that happens once in a few months.
here a scenario:
I start the engine and drive for a while (more than a hour).
I stop the engine, lets say for a few minutes, and try to start again.
electricity is OK for the starter doesn't do something (not a sound).
If I disconnect the battery (ground) for a minute and then reconnect it again, The engine start with no problem.
As I mention, This issue is very rare. It happened maybe 3-4 times last year.
My battery is 2.8 years old and I drive once a week.
Any Idea?
Thanks

My guess is that this is nothing to do with your starter and more to do with the condition of your battery and/or your connections. a good solid clean will make a difference.

Side mount batteries are known for having poor connections. I'd take you car to Auto Zone and they (for free) will put your car on a tester to check the condition of the battery the alternator out put and your starter.

FWIW, I had some quirky electrical stuff until i replaced the side terminal bolts. you can pick up a set at most parts stores. They will unscrew from the cable end and the new ones thread through.

Hi,
I use battery disconnect switch like this one:
http://www.corvetteamerica.com/part-info?partno=X2515
As you said, maybe the ground is loose of I don't close it well.
I'll try to disconnect the terminal and re-connect it. give it a good clean.
Thanks.

Hi
If you hear nothing not even a click of the solenoid, then you may have a bad solenoid valve.
There are repair kits available, there is a disc inside that gets gets coated by arcing and makes a poor contact over time.

See below for new starter solenoid.

Does your dash light up when this happens? I vote for something going on with the starter interrupt. Next time it happens try locking the door (while open) from the inside with power lock, get out and close it. Then unlock with your key. Then try

So? What does a sound indicate? Not a through test. Take an idiot light and hook it up to the starter wire going to the solenoid. See if it lights up when you crank. If it gets signal, look elsewhere. If it doesn't, look upstream of that wire. If it doesn't get a signal, the best starter won't work. Ensure that it gets a signal when you have a no crank condition and we can go from there

An update,
I've decided to replace the battery. I verified all cables are tight.
I've driven about 500 miles since the replacement. at least 20 starters within.

No. problems so far.

Time will tell.

On starter problems like this I tend to think it's the solenoid most of the time except in this case with the battery disconnect you never know. I always thought they could be a problem with age.

I replaced the terminal bolts on battery cables in the past and just did one on the vette. When you feel they don’t tighten solid then you know they are worn out.
