Unless you want a "dead man switch" on the pump.

ECM won't care. You just won't get pump voltage showing up on your scanner. Can you define what you are worrying about really? You'd still need a fuse whether it goes through the fuse box or external and you'd still need a relay. What is the issue with the oil pressure switch? I have disconnected it and my car starts and runs.
I guess you're right...I wasn't the best electrical "diagnostician" when I got this car......wasn't thrilled about figuring out how relays worked, pins a through whatever. But since I been through this a couple of times, I'm beginning to see how it all works...the fuel system that is. I'm a yooper....got to know how crap works....now that I do, I was just wondering if there wouldn't be a easier way to do it without all the switches, relays, wires and connectors.....probably why racetronix uses the alternator for power....engine off, pump off.... Just seems like GM went a long long way to turn a pump on...anyway....it's sunday...south florida, weather is good, I'm on the way out.....thanks again....Paul

If I am reading it right, Racetronix would be ALTERNATOR OFF (or not working), pump off. IOW engine off, alternator stops, pump stops. However, what if the alternator dies?

If the alternator is completely dead the voltage would still be supplied by the battery in the circuit until it also died, it just wouldn't power the pump up to its maximum ability.

The RX just uses the hot wire as extra juice via a thicker wire.

This is the 2nd time i've went around with this....wasn't aware racetronix had a harness from the alternator.....why can't I just run a wire from a hot switch in my car back to the fuel pump and turn it on manually?.....wouldn't need to worry about oil switch, fuel pump relay, inline fuse, would be bypassing the old fuse box.....and all those old connections and connectors......wouldn't hurt the ecm would it???? Anyway, thanks for all the input.....she's running sweet as sugar again....
I thought you had already replaced that bulkhead connector on the sending unit, if you haven't upgraded to what RX sells, then you need to do that if you decide to add their piggyback harness, which you would need to maximize what the pump can do.

didn't replace it, just cleaned the connections.....now that i've spliced it....and there's an existing splice on the grey wire too, I'm going to replace the whole thing, assuming you still can get that piece in the bulkhead.....rx says that harness for an 85 is not available....emailed them to find out why or if there is an option....don't seem to be able to get them on the phone....
