The z-51 is the "hi-performance" handling package. Depending on the year, it has higher spring rates, Delco/Bilstein shocks, larger sway bars, and a tighter steering ratio.

The easiest way to tell if you have a z-51 is by the # of turns from lock to lock on your steering wheel. If you can only turn it 2 - 2 1/4 turns, then it is a z-51. If it is (I think) 2 3/4 turns, it is not a z-51. Of course, you can always check your RPOs too. :D

I have a 1987 Z-52 ..My Window sticker and build sheet shows the RPO code Z-52 as a "$470.00 Sport handling package" option.

My steering wheel rotates the same as the Z-51. There is no difference in the steering boxes.
Your build sheet or window sticker will determine your exact rpo codes.

How noticible is the difference between these versions? I have an '87 with Z52... It handles great but I wonder how the Z51 feels...

there is a bit of difference in the spring rates, so Z51 rides a little rougher

Both Z51 and Z52 had the quick steering rack, the engine oil cooler, the HD radiator and radiator boost fan.

For MY87, Z52 included the larger, 30mm front stabilizer bar but the rest of the suspension was base level.

For MY88, Z52 had all base level suspension parts incl. front stab. bar. MY88 ZX52 also used the 17-in. wheels and 275/40 tires used by Z51.

for MY 85, the Z51 also had 9.5" wide wheels. I don't know if Z52 had 8.5" or 9.5", though.
