I'm stepping up from a 2.95 though. still pretty good step up

I think I'm gunna stick with the 3.45s since I'm already making a bit more power down low than stock

Try the 307, with tc and very low 1st gear of auto could work out very well all around setup.

Do the 'math' using tire dimensions and the various gear ratio that were offered in the D44. Your ratio choices would be for OE/GM 3.07, 3.33, 3.45 and 3.54. Shopping hard for a preferred I'd think could be valuable.

I went from 2.59 to 3.54 and really woke up the car's performance without loosing the street ability of it and being able to cruise at 70 all day

I have an 85 A4 and I swapped out the D36 for a D44. 3.73s to me is a good all around gear and is what I am running too. Good upgrade.

I bought a Hyper tech programmer for my 96 LT1. I liked it cause you could raise the rev limiter, turn on the cooling fans sooner, change your shift points, and make speedo correction for gear changes. My car was pretty much stock other than I installed a 3" B&B cat back exhaust. The car was an auto trans with the 2.59 rear. I picked up a 3.07 dana 36 but never made the swap. It ran consistent 13.70's all day long. People say they don't have any use for top end. But I frequently took it up to it's top of 156 mph. I think GM did pretty good with selecting the 3.07 for the LT1 as the performance gear. Then I bought a 91 ZR1 from my friend and he had changed the gears from the 3.45's to 4.10's. Along with headers, no cats, and a 3" B&B exhaust and custom chip. I really liked the 4.10's in that car a lot. Gears really do make or break a cars setup and purpose. With the kind of power the OP's car is making the 3.45 or the 3.54 would be a great choice for a car with the auto trans. I sure wish I had tried the 3.07's in my stock LT1.

yea ordered some 3.54 dana gears
really looking forward to the change!

I'm interested in that hyper tech programmer. It won't mess with the tune on the car? just changed the things I want to change?

I love the 3.54's so far. You will get a slight whine out of it that wasn't there previously. My gear shop even told me in advance to pre-warn me.
I was expecting MUCH worse and as I broke it in, it got quieter. I hardly notice it after the fluid change.

I'm not sure if the Tuner Cat or Hypertech is still available for the 96 LT1.
I've done tons of searching recently and from what I've gathered, apparently Tuner Cat was Jet or visa versa.

If you run across something from Hypertech that's still available, please post it. I need to get this straightened out.

I ran 4:10 with 375rwhp and A4. Ran 11:50's on drag radials but was hard on u-joints and 1/2 shafts!

My experience is my car is a 93, 318 to the wheels with auto. I have a 2800 stall converter and 3.54 that I installed to get rid of the dreadful 2.59. I am very happy with the gear. however I think my car at the track would improve quite a bit by upping to 3.73 or 4.11. not sure how I would like them on the highway though. like others, it's really about your use. honestly I probably track my car more then street but I got my gears from another member for a great deal so I am happy with it the way it is. not sure if that helps but that's my .02
