Default Paint my gas tank?

Hello everybody,

I just pulled my gas tank from my 1985 Corvette. It needs the seam where the fuel pump goes in to be repaired, welded. The mechanic at the shop said I should paint the tank. I have heard that painting gas tanks is not a good thing. Anybody have a definite answer. Yes or No

Thank you

If your 85 is like my 85, it has the plastic bladder in the stock tank. This is a problem because they leak and rust from beneath.

I wouldn't pay a nickle to try and repair one of those.. I'd trash it.

Here's what happened to mine and the replacement was about two hundred bucks, I think. I painted it. Seems fine.

Be sure to use good fuel hose with the proper rating!

If it's metal, you can paint it. I've painted several in the past with BBQ black paint or with black stone chip paint with good results.

Thank you. I replaced a gas tank in my truck and the mechanic said that painting gas tanks accelerates rusting. I was just wondering. Thank you all for the help

It's kinda the opposite.. If you can keep oxygen away from something, it can't rust.

He was an experienced mechanic. I figured he knew. But, like you say protecting it is the proper thing to do.

If you guys think yours were bad - look at the one from my 1994!

I will say this - it never leaked. The bladder on the inside is very thick rubber, maybe 1/4 inch thick or so. Of course the straps barely kept this thing in place in the car. It was a relief to swap it out and not have to worry about it anymore. Gotta love cars from the northeast (this one came from PA originally)

I painted the replacement (a nice clean salvaged OEM tank from ebay) with roll on truck bed coating.

lol.

Oh wow.. Another 6 months and you'd just have a big baggie full of gas rolling around back there.

I know right! Once i realized what was going on there I took care of it quick. It's really not THAT bad a job.
