If your vert is like my coupe, then the answer is no. The speaker covers are part of the sill carpet. Remove the screws along the sill area and at the rear door jam. The entire piece from the foot well to the door jam comes out as one piece.
Correct on the removal. Edit: if it is the one on the drivers side you also have to remove the seat bottom and then the plastic e-brake cover in order to remove the sill. I can take some digital pics of my service manual on this if you want. It's not as much of a pain in the rear as it sounds.
The scratchy sound is the amp on it's way out. It is a common occurrance. I just sent 2 of my amps out for repair. If you know about soldiering and capacitors this is a DIY job. Sadly I don't know that stuff so for me it is a checkbook job.

Bye Bye amp or it could also be a blown speaker. Bose speakers are paper and foam. Very cheap construction and don't hold up well. You gotta open her up and see. Either replace the parts inside the amps, send it out to RadioJoe, or install an aftermarket system that was designed after Zepplin stopped touring. I believe there is the cap replacement operation detailed in the tech tips section. Let us know if you need more help.
