Default Rubber whip antenna?

Anyone replaced the buggy electric antenna on their C4 with a modern rubber whip?
I'd think a modern antenna would have at least as good reception (if not better) as our old fashioned "Up & Down Stick". LOL

Gotta be a reason - or 10 - that nobody uses the old fashioned ones anymore ...

If my stock motorized antenna ever breaks, I'd replace it with something like this I found on Ebay. Bet the reception would be the same, and cost way less than replacing the OEM antenna. Of course there would be some fabricating/modifying to do before this would work.

Finding a BASE is apparently the issue.
I'm looking for something that could be used on a C4, specifically a convertible.
Various masts (like you use on a C5) won't cut it, there is no base on the C4.

Still looking ...

I bought one on ebay for like $8. Worked fine.

Got a picture or link of some kind?
Trying to avoid those hideous ball-joint adjustable base jobs.
