Default Who can help ID Tranny ?

Dear Forum ,
have received a mail from are friend from the .de Corvette forum with a request - which i'm passing on to you ...
He has had a Tranny replaced and has major Problems with it .He drives a 91 Convert. with the Auto Tranny . Don't know the whole story nor why the shop that Rebuilt/Installed won't straighten their F*** up .
He has supplied me with some #'s ... because at this point and time He's not even sure what Vehicle it came from orig.
3 #'s are visible on the Tranny :

4MJ221HT horizontal above the pan on the passenger side

TE7527653 vertical same side

121740953 vertical driver side

Any info would be appreciated !!

Them guys over in Europe love their Vettes just as much - just harder to get spare parts and/or info some times .

Don't know if the 92 4L60 (700R4) numbering is much different, but from my 92 service manual, the 1st number would be the ID number of the tranny. My book shows the first digit is the model year, the next two is the model of the tranny, 3rd digit is "M" for Hydra-Matic 4L60, the next three is the julian date of year built and the last one would be a shift designation (A & B day shift, C & H for second shift)

The other numbers you describe based on their locations should be the vehicle VIN number that the tranny was originally installed in. Can you match the 3rd number above to the VIN number of his car to see if it's close?

Did the shop just install another unit or did they rebuild the one from the car? If the ID number starts with a "4" it could mean that it would be a '94 4L60E which is the electronic version of the 4L60 and needs input from the ECM to work properly.

What are the problems he is experiencing?

Yep the 4 would indicate a 94, my GM shop manual shows 4 YD D 209 A
Same as described above, the 3rd id. "D" is for 4l60E.
Is it possible this is out of an Fbody car or an Impala ?

Thanks for the input !!
Talked to him today - He is thinking its a 84 ( has no ECM hookup).
Tranny is 4 sure not from a Vette .Has a lawyer putting pressure on the install shop - but either they wont tell what vehicle the tranny came from ... or they don't know themselves ...
Thanks again guys
If any new info develops will post .

Oh,,,its garenteed the shop DOES know.

The mechanic who replaced his has it sitting on his bench to rebuild for himself.

He is a victim of the "doope the guy out of his vette trans", the reason being the corvette 700R4/4L60 is the premo performance 4 speed auto for non computerized cars. The only thing thats needed to put it in a camaro or impala/monte carlo is to drill two trans mount bolt holes and change the tailhousing.

They ARE crooks at his shop.

BTW: That trans number is for a 1984 C Truck & G Van with a 4.1L L6 Fed & High altitude package, with a converter code of E6 and a 1397 RPM stall speed.

I WOULD BE PISSED
