Hi I am asking this for a buddy who has a 1990 Coupe with a auto tranny, He has dropped a GM Pref, crate motor in making around 400hp and now wants to rebuild the tranny with custom parts. Who would you recommend that he sends it too for a top notch rebuild? One shop he was told about was Monster Transmission's Any advice on them?
I'd suggest checking 'local' with 'professional' performance shops. There's very likely someone 'local' that can ease the pain and provide documented past history. It might be a good idea to confirm the 4L60 in the car is actually original and not already been through a rebuild or two. The transmission case ID should be very visible with little effort. A '90 I'd expect to find an 0YDM for the code. Anything other than you'd want to probably confirm first.
If your friend has a FSM - ID locations etc. can be found 7A-2
thats true. the e is for the electric solenoids shifting. its still a 4L60 and the upgrades work on 700R4, 4l60, 4l60e. but your right it not the exact same trans. I did many of the upgrades on a 700R4.

Yes and 'Performance Automatics' if we're talking the same 'builder' is located in I believe Frederick MD. The OP is in I believe Iowa maybe because his 'friend' is! There's absolutely no reason to believe that a similar build of his 4L60 can't be accomplished more local to him.
Always good to have someone 'local' vs a buy the other side of the country! Local support is sometimes very important
Now if PA has a dealer close to the OP's zip code everything changes. They may very likely have a dealer close to the OP!
..........
I suggested checking 'LOCAL' - he could maybe very likely receive a PA suggestion from a 'LOCAL'!

I agree with you. only offered video as a reference to what can be done to upgrade trans. I guess I should have said that.
I personally rebuilt my own transmission. I like learning new things and I like knowing what parts are being used. I found a wonderful video that slowing show every step of the rebuild, If I can do it myself I'm going to. everyone is different. I think its a good idea to know something about rebuilding a trans before having someone do it for ya
