Okay I wanted to post this just to see what people thought of it. I want to port the plenum from a tpi L-98. I was thinking about removing the egr walls behinde the throttle body. What would happen if you siamesed the two ports for the throttle body. With doing this I would remove all of the egr walls. What gave me the idea was getting the felpro tpi gasket kit yesterday. It came with a gasket for a siamesed plenum for the throttle body bores. Is that what this gasket is used for? I might not try this myself. I might send it off to SPD porting. He e-mailed me saying that he could do it.
Just my .02, if you can still leave the material behind the throttle body and still remove all the EGR blockage it would be a win win situation. Also in an Allen TPI school a GM instructor told me that the throttle body blades can cause the air to tumble at idle if they are very dirty and therefore cause erratic idle quality so to clean them every tune is a must. I am not sure about the airflow right after the blades but the longer straighter the run is, the better and straighter the air will enter your motor with no erratic idle problems. TPIS said that the blockage right behind the right hole if looking into the intake (assuming this is the EGR webs you are talking about) is the main CFM restriction for the TPI systems in the top of the intake and not to worry about anything else up there. You might want to give TPIS a call to see if they have done this just in case there might be some adverse effect on the motor.
Well I talked it over with the guy from SPD porting. He says anything you can do to eliminate egr stuff behind the throttle body is a good thing. He said that he has done this before and it works well. He said mostly in bottom end rpm. The problem is the price. He said all that grinding might be pricy. Not sure how much yet. He will e-mail me a price tomarrow.
Phobos, doing the plenum is a no brainer. Just the fear of flying! There are many pictures floating around the net on this. If all else fails, go to the nearest Borders, Barnes & Noble etc. and hang out in the automotive section. There should be a number of TPI "How To" books that will give you the confidence you need to do this job. If you have not gotten a hi flow base and runners, do that first. They will give you more top end (HP) and you will feel it. Porting the plenum is a good confidence builder, but you're not going to get a whole lot out of it on it's own. The TPI mods are a good exercise in "collecting a whole bunch of pennies" that will eventually add up to some bucks. But, like pennies, the plenum alone will not make your car HP "rich". In any event, don't pay anyone to do THIS job for you. You can do it!! Just stay tuned to The Forum and ask plenty of questions.
I know porting the plenum is no big deal. I started trying to do it myself but just don't feel like putting the time in. The guy I found will do it for like $60. As far as upper rpm, I'm doing this tpi swap to lower the rpm. The setup I have now will pull hard at 7000. The problem is my cam only goes to like 6200. I need to move the power ban down. I'm not scared to port anything I'm just not very good at it. I learned a long time ago to let other people port stuff for me. I have a tendency to mess up and get mad and then screw it up even worse. I will be port matching the intake to a set of Accel runners.
