Default Muffler/Exhaust Recommendations

I have an 88 corvette that is straightpiped. I recently just put hedman headers on (HED-68440) and im looking to finish up the rest of my exhaust. When i had my cats and mufflers removed, the muffler shop replaced them with metal piping, so my current exhaust system looks real ugly, varies in diameter, and doesnt sound the best.

What i want to do is: get mufflers or glasspacks to have a better tone, and have a muffler shop build the rest all the way to the headers.

So my questions are:
  • Which mufflers should i run if any
  • which glasspacks should i run if any
  • Stay with stock routing, or true dual?
  • 2 1/2 or 3 inch piping?
im looking for a deep, throaty sound. As long as its less obnoxious than straight pipes, I dont care how loud.

I have a Borla system on my 88 convertible. Sounds great most of the time, but it drones pretty bad once the OD kicks in. I might swap it for the magnaflow mufflers at some point. I had a Magnaflow muffler on my RAM with the 5.7 Hemi and it sounded awesome. No drone at all.

I had the magnaflow system on my 89 and it sounded really nice. Low deep rumble. I have the flowmasters on my 92 and liked the way the magnaflows on my 89 sounded better. For piping stick with 2.5. 3 is too much for a stock/modded small block.

Magnaflows. I just removed the delete kit and chambered pipes from my 93 vert and went to a 2 1/2 inch set-up with a stamped Magnaflow x-pipe and mufflers. I did have the early C4 Flowmasters on my 86 coupe (loved the sound) and currently have the C5 Flowmasters with a Magnaflow x-pipe on my 04 vert.

I have headers with Flowmasters, no cats and an X pipe and I love it. Very little drone but the X pipe has a unique sound that some don't like. Definitely a higher pitch. So if you want a lower tone then go with a simple H pipe and it will sound a lot lower.

Unless the combination is radical you have no need for 3" pipes. 2.5" after the header collectors will be fine. I would recommend true duals unless you want to use a crossover H or X.

Mufflers are all subjective on sound, you really have to hear them to know whether you like them. Corsa will have the least resonance in general, but with custom piping, its impossible to definitely say you won't get it.
