New audio system for a 1996 C4
I am looking for options on a upgrade Audio Install. I have an automatic 1996 CY c4 with the middle sized unit ( Cassette and Bose ). I cannot find a lot of units to fit this dash. I want to yank and replace all 4 ( ? ) speakers, replace head unit with AM/FM/CD, add a small amp and mybe a 12" sub in the back. Don't want a 2k dollar install either. Can anyone supply me with links on installs, suggestions, problems I may run into, custom sub boxes for this car, and head units that are known to fit and any other issues please.
Thanks, Tom

check the audio/electronics section out... under general corvette topics.
the dash is not a problem. there is a kit available, I cannot remember who makes it... but it will allow a standard single din to fit in that double din hole.
you can get the kit from circuit city.
I would recommend an alpine head unit, one with 6 preouts... 1 front, 1 rear, 1 sub.
I am very much impressed with JL Audio amps and subs... for speakers... Boston Acoustic makes some very nice ones.
if your out to save some $$, Polk Audio has some nice speakers at a very fair price... check their GRX line.
there is a thread around here somewhere with a great install idea... creates a false floor and installs the sub in the storage box behind the passengers seat. real clean!

I can always count on the Vette Forum...thanks a lot. I love Alpine stuff. I need to find that converter piece you spoke of and REALLY interested in the sub box.

i went with pioneers top of the line head unit, think its the 9300 single din size. i also bought the matching in-dash 6 disc cd changer from pioneer. These both fit the original hole in the face plate perfectly, and looks awesome too. i used Boston Acoustics speakers in the front and rear, in the bose plastic enclosures, and a PPi amp mounted behind the passenger seat (kills about 1 inch of movement in the seat when all the way back). I mounted a cap in the storage compartment, and use a box w/ 2 10s in the rear. I also cut holes in my door panels and mounted 2 inch tweeters. This required dremmeling the fiberglass a bit where the tweeters would hit in order to hve the door panels fit flush like stock. sounds a MILLION times better than stock. :yesnod:

if yuo want some really sweet speakers ... in the class above boston, polk, infiniti, etc... try Focal, CDT, Dynaudio, Diamond Hex.. but those are like.. $350+ a pair, up to $1200 a pair easily... then you need an amp at least 100x2.. so.. it gets cost prohibitive..
i had a clarion head unit, Focal Utopia 6.5's up front, and a single IDQ 10" sub woofer in the back.. it was clean and clear past the threshold of hearing damage.
If you do get rear speakers (And I'd avise against it, although with the mounting locations in the late c4 it might not be a bad idea) then stick wtih an ALPINE head unit with the time correction feature, so it doesnt make your stereo sound stupid. (Like its coming to your right ear from the back)
Ah heck, ill design ya something good... cheap...
http://www.thezeb.com for speakers...
CDT Classics (great speakers) http://thezeb.com/caraudio/cdt_audio.html
You want the CL-51, it's $259, a 5.25 component set. It comes with FREE rear fill, you want the CL-6x rear fill.
For a subwoofer, EDesignaudio makes the best budget sub,
e10kD2 $125
http://edesignaudio.com/ep/kseries.htm
get a box from http://www.speakerhole.com for like, $30
http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?stk_code=alpcda7892
$224 for head unit.
http://www.mmxpress.com/clarion/amplifiers.htm
APX401.4 $240
i dont know about sub amp.. find something nice on http://www.ikesound.com
like a JBL 300-400 watt amp
This will kill anything you can buy at a chain audio store.
