No
Yes
The lowering kit has longer bolts. If you remove the pins and unscrew the nuts more on the stock ones, the hole for the pins will be in the portion of the bolt that is stressed and it will weaken substantially. Get the bolts. They take 5 minutes to put in and cost $20. To be safe, its worth it. :yesnod:

you don't NEED to buy a lowering kit, however you do need to get some locking nuts. Thier are two bolts that go though the ends of your rear spring, simply back these nuts down the treads, the more you back them off the lower your car will sit. Your stock bolts use a coder pin to hold the nut in place this is why you need to get a locking nut. It should lower it about an inch maybe not quite.
I would say just get the longer bolts though, they are easy to install, the front is a little more tricky but we won't get into that.

No....You can not lower the rear with stock bolts. But...you can remove one... go to your nearest Hardware store and match it up. Get the strongest grade bolt they have....change out the bolts making sure the car is level and you will be ready to go.

This photo may help in showing you which bolts need to be replaced. The new "lowering bolts" are in my hand.

I bought the lowering kit from VBP. I won a gift certificate at a local Vette show and used it up on the lowering kit. So, I'm not really sure on its' lenght. I'll try to measure it tonight when I have a chance.

I got mine from http://www.madirect.com Ecklers has them also. Alot of them don't sell the rear only and want to charge 40$ for both front and rear. I think Ecklers charged $20 for just the rear. Also, if you want to do it yourself, get grade 8 bolts. The cost of the bolts with the locking washers is almost the same cost as the kit so why bother trying to hunt it down for a couple bucks.
I wouldn't lower on the stock bolts. I have heard of people snapping them when they do this causing the rear to drop rapidly. Could be bad news if you're doing something "energetic" at the time. :nono:

Why can't you use the stock bolt, if y ou replace the nuts with locking ones? I have the extended bolts and the nut backed off to about where the stock bolt ended and it droped about an inch.

No offense, but as I stated in my first reply, the original bolts have a hole drilled in them for a coter pin. If you back off the nuts below stock, the nut will go over or past the drilled hole. This hole will create a weak point that is stressed and it can snap. This could be especially dangerous at speed as one corner of your car could suddenly bottom out and drop 6". Bad news. If the stock bolt didn't have the hole drilled, I'd say go for it. Also, I like the aftermarket bolts because even though you put locking nuts on them, they don't always lock. The longer bolt gives you some buffer so incase they start backing off, you have sometime before failure. I check mine each time I wash to see if they have moved or if they are still locked. This is just more peace of mind. If I was really concerned, I'd use the stock nuts and drill a hole for a coter pin at the end of the replacement bolt. :leaving: :flag
