Default Rack and Pinion

Time to replace the rack. A while ago a member posted the directions with pictures and step by step instructions. I checked the archives and could not find. Anyone have this post?

Ask L98Terror. He changed the rack and pinion on my 92.

You need to remove the front sway bar and the electric cooling fan to get it out. That's what the GM shop manual says and I didn't believe it. Save yourself the struggling and do what the manual says. Beyond that, there are only three bolts holding it in place and one bolt securing it to the steering shaft. It would be a good idea to replace the tie rod ends if it hasn't been done. Count the number of rotations before the tie rod ends screw off, write it down and when you put them on the new rack use the same number of rotations and your toe alignment will be close enough to drive it to the alignment shop. Make sure both the rack and steering wheel are centered before reattaching them. You will need to remove one of the hard lines on top of the rack before turning in your core, the new one won't have it. Be sure to flush the P/S system. You can also upgrade to the quicker ratio Z51 rack if you car doesn't have the Z51 option. Oh, don't forget to grease the tie rod ends if you replace them!
