AFR Head Questions and Cam Questions from the middle of the ocean
Hi all,
I haven't been active on the forum for about eight months now due to being at sea with the good ol' Navy on the USS Abraham Lincoln. I am still out here, but I have been doing some shopping on the internet.
First of all, the basics about my car:
86
Aluminum Heads
3.07 rear end
auto w/ transgo shift kit
100,000 miles on the motor
I have purchased the following so far:
Power Effects Exhaust
Lingenfelter Headers
Random Tech Catalytic Converter
Super Ram upper and lower
Everything to burn custom proms (should be fun)
Plus a whole new interior ($$$$$$) and a bunch of other non engine related stuff.
Here is my tentative plan. I know this motor doesn't have a lot of life left in it, and when it lets go, I will be throwing a all forged 383 roller motor in as a replacement. But in the meantime, I will put the exhaust and intake on, and this is what I have questions about.
I want to go with AFR 190's, but I have a question about combustion chamber size. I believe my heads right now are 58cc's and should I buy the afr's now and have them milled to 58cc's, or wait for the 383 and do the heads then? Or should I buy the 68 cc heads and leave them as is for the 350, and do any work necessary when switching to the 383. Would this be worth it with the drop in CR? I am planning on getting at least another year out of the 350.
I am planning on running the LPE 74213 cam in the 350 and upgrading to the 219 in the 383. 1.6rr in both applications.
This is my first motor, and I am learning as I go, and I don't have the best resources readily available out here. You all are my only hope. ;)
So to sum it up, should I buy the AFR 190 68cc's now or wait till the 383 to purchase them.
Can't wait to be :steering: and waiving again.
Doug

Id go with the AFRs whenever, the compression wont go up, so you dont have to worry about it detonating. And you can adjust your CR later with the 383 to put it in the 9.5-10.5 range.
Although i think the AL heads will be just fine with that combination, they dont suck as bad as the iron heads do.

First off, let me thank you from the bottom of my heart for your service to our country!!!
I am no expert on the subject, but have been planning to build a stroker myself. If you look at the pistons (JE, Ross etc.) most advertise the flat top 383 stroker pistons to give about a 10.5:1 ratio with 64cc combustion chambers. If your heads were milled to 58cc you would have to buy some seriously deep dished pistons if you want to run street gas.
If you lower the compression on the L98, I think you would be VERY dissapointed in the engines performance. I think I would save the AFR heads for the stroker buildup. You could always have some port work done on the stock heads in the mean time.

Ok,
If I stick with the stock aluminum heads, I don't think I will do any porting work on them. I want to switch to 1.6 rr with the 213 cam, and I was hoping one of you might know what would be necessary for the valve spring upgrade. I would really like to do something that doesn't require any machining. If someone could provide part numbers, that would be great.
Thanks guys for your quick response.
Doug
P.S. What could I expect, roughly to run in the quarter with the stock heads, 1.6rr, 213, superram, and exhaust?

Fair winds and following seas from Vanc. WA.
I should be out there soon if $h1t hits the fan.
I'm running a 58cc AFR 190 w/ ZZ9 cam & 1.6 rr and feel a major difference esp. going from 0-60. You won't be dissapointed if you pick up the AFR's. But wait if you'er going stroker.

Id expect at least low 13s. I dont have the specs on the 213 here in front of me to know any better.

Great advice here to hold off on the heads, considering you're only projecting the current motor for a year or so. In fact if it were me (and it kinda is, 'cause I'm building a 420 right now) I don't think I'd buy anything that I wasn't going to use on the future motor. That could save you several hundred bucks and get you a killer port job on the heads and/or intake :reddevil
Thanks again for what you do.......you folks are truly heroes!

Sorry to hear you guys are on month 7 and counting. The good news is the 3 weeks in Australia and that you can use all that tax free money on your car when you get home. Enjoy those beer days, shipmate.

I'm out here in the sandbox (I'm in the Marines). I'm also looking at heads for my '90. I guess that we could just bench race for entertainment...lol.
