It is hydroscopic so picks up water and wear particles over time.

Start by just flushing and filling with fresh fluid.

Use a bulb baster (like your mom uses on the turkey) to suck as much fluid from the master as possible before you start to flush the system.

After that fill it back up with fresh fluid and while someone pushes the pedal down, open the caliper valve and let the nasty stuff out. Close the valve, and THEN release the pedal.

DO NOT PUMP THE BRAKE PEDAL!!!!! This only introduces air into the fluid and you'll have a heck of a time getting the bubbles out.

Repeat the above process until the fluid comes out clear.

Start at right rear, then work to left rear, then right front then left front.

Keep an eye on the fluid levels in the master. If you suck it dry and introduce air you'll have to start all over.

Brake fluid is good for about two years. Yours is much older.

You need a complete flush, from your question I guess you have never done this. Suggest you get it done at a shop or with a buddy that have done this lots of times.

There may indeed be damage in the system from old fluid.

Trot over to http://www.speedbleeder.com and buy a 28 buck set of four speed bleeders. They'll let you flush the brake fluid without the use of a helper (or any of the fancy vacuum pumps or not-so-fancy turkey basters).

They make it so easy you'll bleed the fluid once or twice a year! :)

Something you might be interested in is gravity bleeding..I do that about once a year...just jack it up..remove all wheels..and put a hose on each bleeder running that to a bottle or can that has a little fluid already in it...then just go around and open all the bleeder valves...just enough that you can see the fluid flowing thru the hose...depending on how much you open the valves it may take a couple hours to get really clear fluid...you need to stay with it to keep the master cylinder full....you dont need any help...no one to pump the brakes etc....also after the first time I did it in a few days the fluid was dark again...I was told this is because the fluid in the ABS does not bleed out....so after you bleed the brakes this old stuff in the ABS mixes with the new stuff in the rest of the system...so now I bleed em twice...do the gravity thing and then in a couple weeks do it agian.. :seeya

Brad,

For a small investment, you'll simplify your life. Once you replace your normal bleeders with the these, bleeding becomes an easy chore:
1. Make sure your reservoir is full
2. Attach a plastic tube to one speed bleeder
3. Jam the hose into any drain container (no need to submerge the hose end)
4. Crack open the speedbleeder a half-turn
5. Pump the brake pedal a few times
6. Refill reservoir
7. Repeat 5, 6 until you see clean fluid
8. Close speedbleeder
9. Repeat at each wheel until completed
10. Take your second sip of your beer

Since my car has F45, there's a few components that prevent easy access to the rear bleeders. Removing the wheels helps - but that would be true regardless if I was using SpeedBleeders.

Since the spring-loaded ball bearing slams shut when you let off the pedal, there's no risk of sucking air back into the fluid. Someone had a great idea in the shower when they came up with these!

:iagree:

I actually like a combination of ideas.

I like the "turkey baster" idea to empty the resavoir...
I like the gravity bleed to flush the sytem... using the turkey baster 1st, should shorten this process.

I also like the speed bleeders, when all you are doing is a "basic" bleed.

There are three manufacturers I know of...

Speedbleeder http://www.speedbleeder.com/
Russell Speed Bleeders (from Summit)
Earl's Solo Bleeds
