Need an Oil Cooler gasket
#4
At one time even though the application was incorrect the Felpro ES 70687 I thought had a correct o-ring. It's been maybe 10 - 12 years but I think a friend revolted at the GM price and bought it. I'd think there's likely still GM dealers with the correct 14087586 on the shelf.
Don't take it as 'gospel' but that's the way I recall it happened. It likely costs nothing to try it 'locally'.
***The OE was actually a thicker gasket and he did confirm that 'for him' the seal in that package did work OK. He mentioned seeing the car several times after and having no issues that he was aware of. In the past I believe I've mentioned only gasket for the job.

there is actually one for sale on fleabay - p/n 14087586, from a seller, white racing products. problem is, it's around $50 shipped - . i'm sure it's all about supply and demand - capitalism at it's finest - there has to be work-around here. before I'd spend fifty, i'd super clean all surfaces, and if the original gasket is somewhat in decent shape, i'd clean the hell out of the original and coat it with the black, oil resistant, permatex gasket maker, and slap the mother back together. at this point what do you have to loose. the worst thing that can happen is it will start leaking and you're back to square one -

My friend didn't try anything other than the Felpro kit. It might have even been something he had and didn't need to shop it. Wix and Baldwin I'm quite sure have gaskets by dimensions.
If a person doesn't have the need it's harder to get motivated for the search.
Wix seems to spec the gasket at 3.1 ID & 3.44 OD and they likely do a few dozen filters with that ID - OD in just the 13/16-16 thread. I quickly stumbled upon one that mentioned a .260 thickness. Is that sufficient thickness? No idea!

Thanks guys. I too was considering an oil filter gasket, but it just didn't seem like a close enough fit to me. I really would like to just do this one time and for get it. I will look into your recommendations. Thanks again.

Take the GM# 14087586 to a dealer you've a relationship with and I'd think you can be helped!!

Randy - can you post the dimensional data on the oil cooler's (original) ring gasket - ID, OD, thickness, etc.. GM didn't design a special gasket for that oil cooler, but most likely, it's a catalog item. just have to find "who's" catalog. I MAY have a source.

If Randy confirms the Wix dimensions (ID - OD) on his cooler/heater you should have everything you asked for less thickness and his has been compressed for how long? I'd think you use the .260 I mentioned and maybe try for just a bit more.
BTW - the 51069 is one of the 13/16-16 threaded filters that I used.

The gasket I doubt a GM creation from anything else but more than likely a Modine creation who I believe were responsible for both the Y-body and F-body coolers.

you guys are loosing me on the "51069" wix number. can that filter gasket be used for the oil cooler gasket? if so, that's an easy fix.

- the compressed thickness dimension would have to be considered in selecting a replacement, however, the amount of compression is probably not as much as you think. I doubt it's more than several thousandths of an inch.

You guys are fantastic. This is all great info.
I did manage to track one down and it should be here this week. I tried to match things up with a common oil filter gasket, but wasn't liking the slight differences in ID/OD and they always seemed to be twice as thick. I'd rather not experiment trying to make something work. Life is good. You fellas have a great new year. Thanks for all the help.
