Have you tried to contact GM. I would try your local dealer, they can probably give you a customer service number. If you have your build sheet some one at GM has to be able to prove the car came with a 44.
Good luck I think you are getting screwed.

Just because you had no choice, doen't mean it isn't listed.
My particular car has -
G44 = 3.07 Rear Axle Ratio
G87 = 8.5 inch Ring Gear
These are the only two "G" codes my car has on its build sheet.
The book has other axle ratios listed for the "G" codes, but nothing is listed as G80 (at least in 1986) for Corvettes.

Time to go forum-shopping is more like it!
I think the local magistrate's court will do nicely, short trip, friendly man on the bench.
5 words that make all ins. co's put up or shut up in Pennsylvania: Bad Faith Cause of Action. Triple Damages + shyster's costs.
I'm going to do what everyone's been saying, get all the info I can from GM, tell the adjuster, "Look, See!" and if it comes to it we'll just have to file on these guys...
Stay Tuned next time for "The Showdown in the Showroom" :smash: :chevy

I could find no listing [in 1986] for a G80.

This problem has sort of shed the light on some quirks in GM's "stock keeping units" for lack of a better term. I guess they determined it to be the most profitable way to get the needed parts to the right cars... certainly not the most descriptive or accurate way...
But I must say that even though I had to get the build sheet to the insurance co. (I thought it should have been their problem) Traveler's Ins. Co. came through yesterday and approved the purchase and installation of the correct rear.
I'm gonna work with the body shop guy to see about finding the lowest milage unit and taking it to have 3.73's installed before he puts it in.
Now, the question is, can I get the trans in the car and the engine running soon enough to destroy the current Dana 36?
Why turn in a perfectly good rear when you can give 'em back a pumpkin full of shrapnel? :lol: :chevy

Maybe that sheet IS only for options.
You are dead-on about GM being all over the place with RPO numbers. Early Vettes ['85] could be ordered with the "Z51" options, but the later years [86-7-8] had the same part numbers as standard equipment, and *more* part numbers listed as Z51 options...So a "Z51" handling package from '85 was OEM standard in '87, but there was a further "Z51" package in '87... :crazy:
I've also noticed that some RPO numbers/codes corresponded to different options in different years...But the same RPO code... :banghead:
