What weight gear oil in the rear end 89 l98 corvette?
I have 77,000 on it and am thinking it is time to change the rear end oil. What weight gear oil in the rear end 89 l98 corvette? I am also thinking I have a oil pump that I use in my boat to pump the oil out and I was wondering if that would work in getting the oil out of the rear end since they don"t put in a drain plug anymore it came with several pieces of plastic tubeing . riding around with the top down. Thanks, Ralph :chevy :auto:

I think the recommended lubricant is GM# 1052271 (which, I believe is basically just 80W-90, GL-4 or 5 gear oil) w/8ounces of the limited slip additive. Personally I would use a synthetic.
I've used Redline 75W-90 in mine. It is supposed to already contain the friction modifier additive. I didn't add any, and I don't have any chatter or untoward noises.
Amsoil, Mobil 1, Royal Purple all make good synthetic gear lubes, as well as Redline. Redline's is NOT API certified, which is not a big deal to me, but may be to you.
Pumping the lubricant out as you describe will work and is preferable to not changing it at all. To be thorough you really have to remove the cover. If you pump it out, try to get it good and warm so you'll get as many contaminants in suspension as possible.

i believe if you are using a synthetic gear oil do not use the addittive also because you could slip the clutches too much now on a everyday car its no big deal but if you are making some power you do not want to slip the clutches
