I actually drive with my fans on all the time. Yes, in traffic and slow town speeds, I see 220 + daily, and sometimes up to 230-240 if it's real hot out and I'm not moving much.
Re: Do all C4's run on the hot side? (black_89_vette)
My 89 383 runs hot too. On the highway, it runs right at 180. Perfect!! It has a 180 T-stat. But, in town in hot weather at low speeds and idle it can get over 230-240. That, I've heard is somewhat normal, but still a little high for me. I have a custom chip that turns the fan on earlier, and I also hotwired the fans to a toggle switch and have them on all the time in this hot weather. If I ran a 160, would the coolant stay around 160 on the highway?
I think somethin is up with your cooling system. If you have a 180, and the fans are triggered to come on earlier than stock, you shouldnt really be getting up that high. With a 160, she'd run lower, but not at 160.
If youre sure the tstat is opening then maybe you should upgrade the Water Pump or Radiator for that 383. Having the fans running when the car is over 55mph is detrimental to cooling also.
In Ontario, I definitely would not run straight water unless this car is strictly summer-hot weather-only. You could get away with a 60/40 mix though. Water wetter would work best if you ran straight water, but if you still want it, its in the vette parts magazines (Ecklers, MidAmerica).

I obviously only run it in the summer, but at what temperature is the "danger zone" for running straight water? Maybe I'd run straight water and a bit of antifreeze for it's rust inhibitors and anti-corrosion qualities.
If I ran the straight water deal, I'd change it back to 50/50 before winter storage.

Do yourself a BIG! favor and pull out your rad! I did mine this last weekend....flushed it out, scrubbed it down and vacuumed the housing it sits in...I went from 228dgs sitting in trafic in 90dg weather to 201dgs sitting in traffic "with the A/C on full"    What a great change!!!!
On the highway it now sits right on 193
You will be very suprized at how much crap you find stuck in the fins
