Default Air Conditioning....

I recently purchased my 1988 35th Anniversary in early february and when i got it everything seemed to work fine the a/c blew cold and the heater worked great, but now since summer has rolled around my a/c still blows at full blast but no cold air comes out...at times ill turn it on and cold air will come out at first but then it turns hot....whats wrong with it? Thanks in advance...

If you're getting intermitten cold air and warm air then this comes to mind: There's a couple of tubes that goes into the heater core and a control valve that rides right between the tubes. It's this valve that control coolant flow into the heater core area. In other words, the air is warmed by the coolant flowing thru the heater core when the temps are low. When you turn on the A/C, the valve closes the coolant flow, thereby letting the A/C system cool more efficiently. That valve might be defective. Look at your engine from the passenger side, this valve is located right above the washer fluid reservoir. Mine's okay, but when my bro's '87 had to have this fixed, it costed him around 2~3 bills tops. Not too bad an expense.

I don't believe the '88 has that valve. If you have electronic air check for a loose rod on the motor that controls the position of the air door. It's on the passenger side and is accessed by removing the hush panel. Then look up and to the right of the heater core casing. You can also pull the blower module out of the evaporator housing and have someone operate the controls while you observe the door. If it isn't moving, the rod is probably loose.
