Recently my -88 has developed some kind of ticking sound from engine. I am experiencing some power loss especially in the upper rpm range. I have done complete tune-up recently(all oils, filters, plugs,wires,o2 sensor, dist.cap, rotor, pcv valve), removed pre-cats, put in a new carsound main cat. Still my vette feels like 7second car. I'm thinking that ticking sound might be the problem why i'm experiencing power loss.
I was looking for solution when I noticed this in Eckler's website:
1986L-96 Competition Cams Rocker Arm Kit 1.6 Ratio (part 28782)
I need to open up the valve covers anyway so I might just install new roller rockers also(and gain some extra ponies also:). I might need new valve springs also and new valve cover gaskets of course. What do you think, am I on the right track here
Oh yeah my car has 75k miles on her...
Ticking: it's either lifters, rods, or loose tolerance on the rockers.
I have the same thing going on with my boat (ford 302) I bought used crane roller rockers and put them in. Quieter valve train, but the tick is still there. I looked for play in the rockers and found none. Now I call it character. (too lazy to take off the manifold...)
It might not be that bad. Your injectors make noise too, maybe thats it. Slower car could me valve train prob or be coinsidence or pyschological. Check the tune up stuff first filters plugs wires etc.
I have a 92 with Crane roller rockers. I've developed a tell tale ticking also, but I think mine is an adjustment problem. My engine is really clean now (after all the front work) and I'm not in the mood to rip off the covers, AGAIN.
I'm going to adjust the valves with it running this time, and that means another mess to clean up. I hope it's not a lifter, if so, the engine will come out and receive a much wanted performance upgrade. BUT I'm going to drive it for the rest of the summer :yesnod:
Build an open-top box out of cardboard about 8" deep that will sit on the head and clear the rockers. (Near) Zero clean up. :yesnod:
I thought about finding a valve cover and cutting holes in it for adjusting. I think a 1" hole ought to do it. Anybody have an old center bolt valve cover?

Re: Ticking sound from engine?! (jutammel)
Other than what everyone else mentioned... try to have someone check the exhaust manifold bolts. My bro's '87 coupe goes tick, tick, tick for the longest time until I read in the archives that loose manifold bolts might be it. We asked our mechanic to check it out and they were indeed loose. Even the mech was surprised we knew what to look for. Point is, after tightening, the ticks were gone! The other ticks were from the injectors, they do make noise!
Ok, thanks for replies. You are right, ticking might come from injectors too. I know that I have leaky injectors becouse it's hard to start when warm and there's fuel odor in the air after start up. Those exhaust manifold bolt need to checked of course. I think im going ahead with this Eckler's Competition Arms 1.6 RR kit anyway becouse I would like to get some extrs ponies and make my car even happier :D
And while im battling with valves I might just do some plenum porting and change all TB gaskets and intake gaskets. Sounds like a plan to me, what do you think?
Hmmm now that I think, faulty egr valve might be also responsible for power loss am I right? So I need to change that too, after 75kmiles I think it's time.
And by the way, I received yesterday my new Magnaflow cat-back and all I can say is *daum!* You WONT believe how impressive looking system this is. Those tips are MASSIVE! The're going to be installed on next thursday and I almost can't wait that long... I wonder what the sound will be like with these and no pre-cats :D
No, not like LT-1. They are round and angled cut, superb design. 3.5 inches across! Truly massive! I might post pictures after I get them installed on Thursday. Don't know the sound yet but I'll bet it's just right :D
