Rear trans bushing
Well,I think I found my noise and it seems to be coming form the trans rear tailshaft housing bushing. Anyone else ever have one of these go bad???
How big a job to replace??
I'm transmissionly challenged.
I can only help up to replacing the actual bushing.
Just installed a Pro-Built transmission and he didn’t have a tail housing for the vette.
Sent me the transmission and the parts kit for the tail shaft housing (with a large oring seal, rear lip seal and a new bushing).
I had the whole transmission out, but I think you could get the housing off with the trans still in the car.
Remove the front exhaust and cats.
Remove the torque beam and drive shaft.
Just four bolts hold the housing on, my speedo is gear driven (1988) and I didn't have to remove the sensor at all, just carefully pulled the housing off.
Might need to tilt the engine/trans down a little to reach the top bolts.
Problem comes in that the bushing looks like its pressed in like a cam bushing.
I machined a shaft the right size (out of aluminum) and started to press it out on my shop press.
It didn't move easy (might be in with locking compound), and I chickened out.
The old one didn't looked worn much (after 40,000 mile) so I just used it again (for now).
You might want to take the housing to a machine shop to press it out and put the new one in.
Also wasn't to easy getting the rear seal out (you need to remove to reach the bushing).
It has a red sealer on it, tuff to pull it being careful not to score the aluminum bore underneath.
Maybe take the whole housing to a shop to replace both.
The tail shaft housing came out pretty easily in my 87, just as mentioned above. My bushing had enough play in it to leak fluid past the seal. I took the housing to a tranny shop and for $30 they pushed in a new bushing and seal and provided all the needed o-rings.
