Best place to purchase the Dana 44 package to replace my Dana 36?
My LT-1 has the stock Dana 36 with a replaced 3.70 rear gear. The performance at the drag strip has been great but the repeated downtime as well as expense requires a change for the 2004 Season. My plan is to replace the Dana 36 with a Dana 44. Its my understanding I will need to buy the Dana 44 pumpkin & cover, a replacement driveshaft for a C4 with manual transmission, a Torque Bar for a C4 with manual transmission and a "Batwing" mounting bracket for the Dana 44 mounting bolt pattern. As well as the rear gears.
I live in the Mid-Atlantic area and was hopeful someone could recommend a good place or vendors to buy all of these parts from or perhaps as a package. I would also like to understand what my gear ratio options are with the Dana 44. Am I correct that with a Dana 44 the closest replacement ratio to what I have now will be the 3.73 gear ratio? What might be another choice?
My LT-1 is an automatic and this past week it ran its best ET at 13.23/102.35 MPH with a 1.726 Sixty Foot time - of course the best news was the Dana 36 held together! The motor is a stock LT-1 with only bolt-on mods and my intensions are to leave it this way - the car has been a very good and consistant bracket racer, just breaking rear ends too often!
I'm more than willing to travel to get the right parts for the rear end change-over at the right price. I just want to make sure that I'm getting the right set-up this time. Thanks for any information concerning this swap.

Bill,
What has been breaking in your Dane 36 ?
How many rebuild have you had ?
Zip products offers a Dana 44 kit for about 2K.
You can also look for a used one and have it rebuilt locally.

Vic:
Spider gears have been most of the problem. I got 20/25 passes on the first set before breaking, replaced the broken gear (8 teeth missing) and made 14 passes when the second spider gear lets go again(gear all but destroyed itself). I'm running the third set-up now and have 350 road miles on it and 8 passes at this point - all is well for now, but I hear that ticking bomb sound when I walk around the rear of the Corvette!
I'll check out Zip Products catalog - thanks, Bill

Try Contemporary Corvette. It's a Corvette only junkyard in PA. They will sell you the whole conversion for $1000-$1400, depending upon gear ratio. They usually have 3.07, 3.33, and lots of 3.45's. It's a lot cheaper than the new ones from Zip. And shipping to MD should only be around $40. I think their address is http://www.contemporarycorvette.com

Contemporary Corvette. 1-800-367-8388. I just did the same thing w/my 1990. Went from 3.07 D36 to 3.45 D44. They sent me everything I needed to do the swap, $1400.
