Has anyone ever experenced brakes locking up at speed?
This weekend I was driving 80 mph and all four brakes engaged and slowed the car to a stop. after 30 min. the brakes released and the pedal went to the floor,I bleed the lines and now all I have is a brake light on the dash. As well as four shot rotors and cooked pads! What do you think?
The car only has 21,122 miles and spends a lot of time under cover, the dealer told me the brake lines are the best place to start. He told me the lines deteriorate and cause the fluid to boil over? I asked why the brakes released after 30min. and he told me the rotors expand from heat as they cool the brakes release.
I had this happen on a '65. I found the compensating port in the master cylinder was plugged. The compensating port is a small hole ahead of the piston seal the allows expanding fluid to flow back into the reservoir. If it's plugged, the fluid heats up and applies the brakes. As the brakes heat up the fluid expands more, and you soon get full brakes. Let 'em cool about 30 minutes and drive away. I have silicone fluid and I think that may be more prone to expand.
I was very impressed that the disc brakes on the '65 would grind the car to a halt even with full throttle on the 396 in 1st gear!
Someone has too much time on their hands! If I'm reading correctly, this thread is more than 6 years old.
This is my buddies car and it WAS the master cylinder (compensating port)...I didn't see this post until yesterday so I thought I would let everyone know what actually fixed it
