Exhaust Resonators???
Hey everyone, I have a couple exhaust questions you may be able to help me out with. I have a Borla Cat Back system. What is the purpose of the resonator between the cats and mufflers? Would there be any effect (positive or negative) by removing these? How would it sound.

I was reading recently about exhaust tuning and I'm not sure how truthful this theory is, but it makes some sense, that they are used for tuning purposes, by putting the resonator in the system it effectually makes the engine believe the pipes are longer or of a larger volume. Just as plenum volume effects the intake tuning the resonator can effect the exhaust tuning. You may want to cal Borla and run the question past them and see what they say. Like I said, it's something I read, so I don't know if it's true or not. Just thought I'd pass it on.

I replaced my stock mufflers with Magnaflows. Later I simply removed the resonator and replaced it with straight tubing. The car is only marginally louder, the car is quicker at the drag strip too.

I did the same thing with my LT1 and lost .3 ET and 3/4 mph. Put the resenator back on and gained all the loss back. My LT1 was stock though other than the Magna Flows. Have LT4 now and Corsa cat back and long tubes and the longtubes really made a difference [sound and torque/hp]. The Corsa system is a straight through system.
